Quick questions from a new owner

Hello everyone, proud new owner as of two weeks ago of a 2011 Thunder Grey S1KRR. I have found this forum very helpful but still have a couple questions that I have not found yet.

Although I have had my M license for ten years, this is my first time owning a Supersport bike. I had ridden them before R6, Triumph 1000cc, but I know that the S1KRR is a totally different type of bike.

I know that if I want to feel a good chunk of its power, I will need to twist that throttle. I am a little nervous seeing posts about the front wheel coming off the ground. If the bike does start to wheelie, do you guys have any tips for controlling it back to the ground? I used to do this on a different bike but had a little accident and haven't wanted to try since.

Also, just because we can, what tips can you give for taking off the drivers seat? I do want to eventually install the slick mode chip just because I can. I have heard that can take two people to help take off the drivers seat.

Welcome to the site. The traction control will help keep the front down but it will still come up. Others might offer better suggestions bit I'd just slip the clutch a little to drop it. It does feel pretty awesome when the front comes up though. I rarely find it more than 10" off the ground before the traction control brings it smoothly back to earth.
As for the riders seat I never had a problem getting it off. I don't use the supplied torx key as it doesn't give me enough leverage. I have a set of torx sockets in my socket set and they work a treat. Someone on the forum offers quick release pins if you wanted to go that way with it.

Anyway, enjoy the bike ;)

So in theory, if the bike starts to wheelie, you could grab the clutch or possibly lift off the gas, keep the handle bars straight, and it should make a smooth landing correct? Any other tips?

I'm clutz and would drop the screw so I found this link

The thing about the quick release at least for me is the post would drive the collar out. I ended up using epoxy to glue the collar to the plastic tab.

From a guy with 12000 miles plus on the S1000RR. Leave it in sport mode, when the tire comes up still keep it WOT. In sport mode the tire comes up about 6 inches and comes back down without any help from the rider even if the throttle is WOT. Race and Slick mode I cannot talk about since I never rode in those modes. Urban Legend out.

The first N times it happened to me, I didn't realize I was doing a wheelie until the front tire came back down and the handlebars gave me a little wiggle. N is a number larger than 10! I know what to look for now, and I can also predict when the tire is likely to come up, so I now know when it is happening. A darn safe way to learn these things! Thanks, BMW.

There is a great thread in this forum on installing the slick mode chip. Getting the seat on and off doesn't require 2 people, but BMW was a bit stupid about the placement of the rear two screws which can be a drag to work with. After market seats, like Sargent, are better.

As to wheelies, on the street, I haven't had a problem. On the track, the DTC has always done it's job. I tend to ride race mode and sport mode (condition and mood dependent), and when I'm feeling it, slick mode. Just watch the back wheel when braking hard in slick mode...I've found it likes to squirm around...surprised me as in the other modes, this doesn't happen.

ahhh. Well, I just use a ratchet with a hex bit and an extender to squeeze down in there to both unscrew and screw. be careful when removing that the screws don't scratch anything, and have patience when replacing to get things lined up. Other than that, it's pretty easy. Again, happily I found that the Sargent seat is more pliable and therefore easier to get on and off.

Just ride the bike in sport mode for a couple of thousand miles and get a feel for the bike. You don't need to spend a lot of time worrying about wheelies. Like said above, the bike does the work for you.

I borrowed a buddies zx10r 07' before i bought the s1000 and I started quick out of a stop sign, the front end became light (came up just a bit) because I was sitting a little back in the seat, well when it contacted the pavement again, I got some handle bar/wheel wobble and rode it out, but didn't like that at all. Seen too many tank slappers on YouTube. Anyway, his bike was lowered I think with forks up in triple clamp so my theory is that that handle bar wobble was more specific to his bike, and wouldn't necessarily translate to the longer wheel base of the s1000rr (since I haven't changed it). Anyway, have you guys experienced a lot of wobble?? Does it happen regularly?? Don't plan on wheelies tomorrow, but def don't want a tank slapper when the bike eventually comes up (track coming up anyway).
