There are several places to get switched voltage from, after all, things like the parking lamps cut on/off with the ignition. You may have had an issue because of the power draw. If you need a significant amount of power, I would go straight to the battery. You could easily tap into a tail light, let's say, connect a relay and then run + to battery and - to frame.

*edit*
Just saw your second post. That works too but the capacity would be mediocore, plus you still have to run wires to front of bike. At least with a relay out back, you could do heated gear as well as multiple accessories.
My escort 9500ci radar detector module is in the trunk, so it works to get power from the tail.

I'd be fine with a relay, but the issue was that I could not get switched power from the lap timer connector that looks "normal", i.e. went to 0v and +12v when the ignition went on. I looked at the wiring diagram and found that the ECU was involved inthe laptime connections so that plus measurements with a voltmeter led me to give up on the laptimer connector approach. As I recall others had a similar experience with trying to get power from the lap timer connector.

In the manual, it says there are 2 aux plugs in fairings (left and right).

On the right side is the lap timer, does not provide power. One on the left provides power and is meant to connect a GPS/phone to it. Don't use lab timer plug to power a phone/GPS.

When I was at the dealer I asked how can I hook my phone to aux plug in left fairing. A techie showed me exact part found in this thread post #8. Three wires connect to a power plug adapter (another part) that hooks into plug on the left side. Then a power adapter to USB can be hooked to power GPS/phone. It sounds convoluted so to visualize it:

plug on fairing --> part in post #8 --> connect to power adapter --> hook power adapter to USB --> phone

Dealer asked me if I wanted just to buy the parts or to have them install it. 1h labor. I said I'll think about it.

I like to learn about my bike. Anyone familiar with this set up? I can go buy the parts tomorrow if someone on here can provide some help. I prefer this setup over a long cable that goes to battery and hidden under the tank/seat.

^ The plug is supposed to provide power. Why did you have to run a wire back to fuse box? I'm confused.

I'm new to s1k, correct me if I'm wrong: if aux plug on left fairing is used, no need to connect any wires back to battery. No?

I just spoke to dealer techie again, he said "honestly no one I know of has this setup yet, I cannot tell you exactly which parts to tell you to order" when I asked which usb adapter to use to hook to aux power plug. Any ideas?

Or buy the usb stick I suggested if you're just looking to keep a phone charged.
Your suggestion works great for just charging. But for charging and viewing navigation it's cleaner to go with OEM power plug on left fairing, no need to run any long wires. Too bad not many people run that setup.

I run my phone all day with this USB stick and it works just fine. Also, all of the wires are hidden under the tank side.

I can understand using the aux plug for more power hungry stuff like Radar detectors and GPS. That's why I asked how much power these devices require.

I just went back to the battery for my GPS. I didn't care if it was switched or not. I either remove the GPS or turn it off when the bike is not running, so switching doesn't matter to me. I'll run centech or blue sea fuse block, and relays if they are needed, for anything more exotic. I don't run any USB devices or do phone charging. Just my experience...

I don't get it, BMW put a switched power plug in left fairing exactly for a phone/GPS. Most people don't seem to utilize it. Most people go for known option (directly to battery, run long cable). I wish if there were more info about it.

Not sure what else you're looking for. This thread has plenty of info if you're looking to use the aux plug. Some of us just like to go back to the battery. It's easy to do. It's the path of least resistance.

There is a DIY on here by Frankoq if you want to install a fuse box. What more would you like?

Do you have to remove the gas tank to snake the cable from battery to front of bike? I'm familiar with dirt bikes, I cannot think of a neat way to get a cable from battery to mount close to steering stem on a sportsbike.

I made this up from the BMW cable and a water resistant 12v to 5v DC to DC converter USB cable.
This is the route I found to be best. Great info in this thread! Some questions:

1- Could you provide the link to buy USB cable used in pic?
2- Did you solder and heatshrink the connection?
3- How do you plan to mount on on left fairing? Drill a hole or use a mount?

4- Also, do you plan to use a water resistant USB to phone cable? I found a great one called red plug https://www.3brpowersports.com/products_Red_Band_USB.php.

It operates at 1amp so phone/GPS gets charged twice as fast. Regular cables (use data and charging) cause phones to charge at half the speed. Charge only cables (no data) let devices charge at full capacity.
