GPS wiring inquiry

In the manual, it says there are 2 aux plugs in fairings (left and right).

On the right side is the lap timer, does not provide power. One on the left provides power and is meant to connect a GPS/phone to it. Don't use lab timer plug to power a phone/GPS.

When I was at the dealer I asked how can I hook my phone to aux plug in left fairing. A techie showed me exact part found in this thread post #8. Three wires connect to a power plug adapter (another part) that hooks into plug on the left side. Then a power adapter to USB can be hooked to power GPS/phone. It sounds convoluted so to visualize it:

plug on fairing --> part in post #8 --> connect to power adapter --> hook power adapter to USB --> phone

Dealer asked me if I wanted just to buy the parts or to have them install it. 1h labor. I said I'll think about it.

I like to learn about my bike. Anyone familiar with this set up? I can go buy the parts tomorrow if someone on here can provide some help. I prefer this setup over a long cable that goes to battery and hidden under the tank/seat.

^ The plug is supposed to provide power. Why did you have to run a wire back to fuse box? I'm confused.

I'm new to s1k, correct me if I'm wrong: if aux plug on left fairing is used, no need to connect any wires back to battery. No?

I just spoke to dealer techie again, he said "honestly no one I know of has this setup yet, I cannot tell you exactly which parts to tell you to order" when I asked which usb adapter to use to hook to aux power plug. Any ideas?

Or buy the usb stick I suggested if you're just looking to keep a phone charged.
Your suggestion works great for just charging. But for charging and viewing navigation it's cleaner to go with OEM power plug on left fairing, no need to run any long wires. Too bad not many people run that setup.

I don't get it, BMW put a switched power plug in left fairing exactly for a phone/GPS. Most people don't seem to utilize it. Most people go for known option (directly to battery, run long cable). I wish if there were more info about it.

Not sure what else you're looking for. This thread has plenty of info if you're looking to use the aux plug. Some of us just like to go back to the battery. It's easy to do. It's the path of least resistance.

There is a DIY on here by Frankoq if you want to install a fuse box. What more would you like?
Do you have to remove the gas tank to snake the cable from battery to front of bike? I'm familiar with dirt bikes, I cannot think of a neat way to get a cable from battery to mount close to steering stem on a sportsbike.

I made this up from the BMW cable and a water resistant 12v to 5v DC to DC converter USB cable.
This is the route I found to be best. Great info in this thread! Some questions:

1- Could you provide the link to buy USB cable used in pic?
2- Did you solder and heatshrink the connection?
3- How do you plan to mount on on left fairing? Drill a hole or use a mount?

4- Also, do you plan to use a water resistant USB to phone cable? I found a great one called red plug https://www.3brpowersports.com/products_Red_Band_USB.php.

It operates at 1amp so phone/GPS gets charged twice as fast. Regular cables (use data and charging) cause phones to charge at half the speed. Charge only cables (no data) let devices charge at full capacity.

1) This one is the same NEW USB DC Converter 12V TO 5V Step Down 1M Cable Charger MP3 MP4 Iphone Ipad | eBay
2) Yes, soldered each wire then heat shrunk each one then heat shrunk both.
3) See picture below, I have a S1000R but it's basically the same.
4) Nah just used some electrical tape and mounted it upside down. Would be extremely hard for water to get in there. I just used a regular iPhone cable that goes into a waterproof case

You only need to short the two data pins to do what that cable does for most phones but as usual it doesnt apply to the iPhone as Apple always have to be a pain in the arse.
You rock bro! Thank you. Exact setup I wanted.

Which phone mount and steering stem mount are you using? I found many options, each has its own pro/cons. I would rather go with something already tested to work well. No vibration, instability, etc...

Slight confusion. Is it right or left side plug for 12V ? In the beginning of forum, someone said right side.

Also, will be enough to power a radar detector and GPS? Thanks
For power use left side fairing. You will find two plugs; one for power the other for something else. Each plug has a different mold, go by part number mentioned here for power.

I think power plug can handle up to 2.5-3amps, so check total draw from your detector and GPS and ensure it's under what power plug provides. If it's over then you will need to connect to battery directly.

I connect an action camera and a phone as GPS. Both draw less than 2amps so it works fine.

The plug on the right fairing is for race extra sensor. Don't connect your power gadgets there, some people did that and caused electrical issues. Check the manual under aux power from index page for reference.

My answer is for 15 RR. I mentioned to consult the manual under aux power section so you're sure which side to go with.

I wanted to summarize my USB setup using BMW Aux power on left side fairing for 2015 RR. To make it easy for everyone:

USB power plug:
Amazon.com: DROK® Buck Power Converter 12V to 5V 3A DC-DC Voltage Transformer Step-down Volt Regulator Inverter with Type-A Female USB Charger for iPhone iPad Phone Vehicle DVR Recorder: Electronics

A soldering iron is needed to connect USB power plug to BMW plug above. This is still stock fitment as no wires on bike are being touched.

And this so you can wire 2 devices: if you only care about phone (no camera) you don't need it..

Under the left fairing, two plugs can be seen. Only one of them will fit the above BMW plug. To save you sometime, it's the lower plug. Keep in mind in the manual the pics are tricky confusing. Be sure total power draw does not exceed 2.5mamps I use it for my phone and camera. Works great.

I don't like the idea of drilling/changing the fairings. I used a ziptie to mount the USB port of the bottom black piece you have in your pic. BMW already uses zipties to mount other cables there, I followed the same route.

Instead of exposing USB ports, I keep USB 2 cables plugged in port, they're kept under the fairing with a velcro, when needed I pull cables outside to connect to device. This way I never bother to deal with cables. Instead of plugging cables into USB port on bike, I plug cable into devices and never have to touch USB port. Hopefully, this clarifies things.

BMW aux part needs to be connected with specific order to USB module. Read in previous page, but here is info again:

bmw part number 83300413585 which has numbers on wires. Connect as follows to wires on USB module.
1 to ground, 3 to V, 2 ignore.

Be sure to replace all blown fuses. And you connect USB module to correct aux plug. There are two plugs on clutch side under the fairing, one is aux, the other is not. See user manual to confirm. This is for 15+ RR.

See my previous post about using number on BMW plug. Be sure you connected USB module correctly to BMW plug.
On 2nd gen bikes right side (front brake side) is what's available I think.

3a is max you can get from AUX as far as I know. If you want more, you need to either tap into headlight, or go to battery directly (not recommended).
