Right. This information is old hat, and dealers should be aware of it. It is not a secret.

The bike comes with a Black screw plug for the cam chain tensioner. The problem is a noisy cam chain at a startup where it rattles pretty loudly. The chain stretches over time, and the tensioner no longer provides enough pressure to keep the chain tight.

An updated screw plug that is longer is the fix. The new screw plug is Silver. This can only be fitted after 15,000kms. It is not the tensioner itself but a more extended screw plug that puts more pressure on the tensioner.

It's only if the bike has a startup cam chain rattle. This is not a be-all and end-all noisy fix, as most people seem to have a problem with the noise on these bikes. The dealer will not just replace it if you ask. They must determine if it has a startup rattle and proceed accordingly. It would help if you took the bike to a dealer complaining of the startup rattle. Do not replace the part if the motorcycle is not rattling on startup. It's not an automatic replacement once you hit 15,000kms. Read my original post carefully before anyone starts jumping to conclusions. Replacing it prematurely could also cause damage and make the chain too tight.

THIS IS NOT A FIX FOR NOISY OR TICKING ENGINES IN GENERAL.

Curious why only after 15,000kms?

I have 16k miles, so this means I just go to dealership and ask them to replace the tensioner plug? Covered under warranty for 15 RR?

What's the price on the part? I've got one more week of warranty left and I doubt the dealer will do it. I just had the bike in there last week for the clutch rattle (again) which he claims is normal and wouldn't even take the cover off to inspect. I seriously doubt he will do this and I am positive the chain tension is making backlash noise. I'd be happy to do it myself. Anything to get this engine more quiet.

If I understand correctly, this should only be used when the chain stretches. Is it possible to stretch before the suggested 15,000 km? Conversely, a bike could go longer without stretching the chain.

It sounds like it's not appropriate to use it if the chain isn't stretched.

Is this fix for all s 1000 rr engines 2010-?
I have a 2012 and called the official BMW dealer here in Denmark to hear if they changed the screw plug. They had never change it on a s 1000, and had in fact never heard about it.
I think this sounds strange since they are the biggest BMW motorrad dealer in Denmark!
Mine have 17.000 miles on the clock, and it sounds terrible when I start the engine when cold. Otherwise the cam chain noise is normal for a s 1000.

Anyone had any luck with this part also solving the neutral with clutch out (cold or hot, doesn't matter) rattle? I read another thread where that rattle turned out to be cam chain related but the actual fix was not mentioned.

i installed my manual cam chain tensioner, started the motor and adjusted to where oem normally sounds, not the start up rattle but not too tight either.

little loose is better than a little tight, the problem with oem is during high speed runs suddenly chopping throttle or other things like downshifting too much and dropping the clutch can result in a sudden change of oil pressure just as the maximum amount of force is being exerted on the cam chain tensioner. there is backoff protection which prevents the tensioner from losing tension but it can fail. this happened on a yamaha to a buddy of mine at the track with a pretty much new fj09. although, this is a 1% or less use case where it makes sense to install one

I have 26,000 kms on my 17 model now and engine start up both hot and cold is noisy as hell for approx 3-4 seconds. This has been the case for almost 15,000 km now. I have asked the dealer about this 3 times and each time they tell me it's just normal for the RR and I just need to live with it? @bennymx in your opinion should my horse be a candidate??

Its a related question. I have the longer tentioner fitted, bike has 40k km now. The distribution chain and rollers, do they need changing if there is engine noise? Are they under warranty? There is nothing about this in The service schedule paper sheet, just another oil/filter change
