Obviously not a typical experience, but the point is that with Ducatis the warranty isn't there as insurance against unlikely catastrophic failure...it's a necessary part of ownership. I've owned a duc in the past and fully intend to own another, but there's no point in trying to sugarcoat the ownership experience away from riding the bike.

I sat on the 1199 this past weekend. Felt hard as a rock. It is such a sexy bike but thats not enough for me. I need to be able to get on it on a Saturday and ride 200 miles. Hop on it and ride all day long. Sure i stop to rest and chat and eat but no way would i wanna do that on the 1199 i sat on. If the 1299 is anything like it ill pass.

For me i live 20 miles from anything so i need to be comfy. On other bikes i would be ready to get off the damn thing once i got to where i wanted to ride.

If you have the coin to make it a track only ok. Or if you have the coin to have it as a second bike that is more of garage art ok. Not as a normal bike tho.

 

you mentioned you didn't particularly ride much. comfort may not be the most important thing on your list of next-bike requirements.

i'm just getting back into biking and was also considering the 1299. almost put a deposit down. but one thing that really attracted me to the bmw was the 'active' suspension. you need to step up to the 1299 S to get the equivalent on the duc. and that would set you back close to 30k (in canada).

but as another poster mentioned.. i too loved the ducati since the 916. i think it's absolutely gorgeous.

If you're riding mostly on the street the 1299 is the bike. They claim to have restored that intoxicating mid-range punch of previous generation Ducs and it's got all the rider aids and techno-goodies that anybody could want. I would think the only reason they're still shipping a 1199 is to homologate for super bike racing.

 

If you want a bike to look at then panigale, if you want a bike to ride everyday S1000RR.

 

After reading the early reviews and sitting on the bike at my dealer last night I am pretty much sold, I am going to replace my HP4 with the 1299s.

Had a 13 s1000rr rode it for the season, winter came and i was watching things on the 1199 since i couldn't ride. Decided to go to the dealer and check it out, ended up selling my s1000rr for a 13 1199 because i was consumed with the "omg its a ducati..bug" ya well use bug for lack of better wording. Wanted to experience the ducati ownership you read about and how awesome it is, well it is.. but it wears off. Instead of telling people about my ducati i find myself talking and telling story's about my rr and how i miss it if that doesn't say enough. Its and nice bike don't get me wrong but i don't feel as confident on it as i did with the bmw. Coming from the rr it feels kinda...cheap (to me)? Will say the bmw with the heated frames ARE hotter than the 1199 in traffic (again to me). The 1199 don't like to restart after a ride in sun.. Not sure if that was just my bike or not tho. The torque of the twin doesn't make up for how short the actual power band is (when going in a straight line) and to me the rr felt faster even in the mid range. That could go back to the confidence thing tho. Both bikes i rode as a commuter and when i rode the 1199 more than an hour my hammys would cramp (and im only 22) . To wrap it up the 1199 and the ducati lyfe isnt for me and i cant wait till april when im riding my 15 rr to its new home! Wont venture from the bmw again.

They will not start if the dash over heats in the sun. Gotta poor water on it or push it in the shade.

 

my experience

I recently had the chance to spend a few days with a 1199 S and loved the ride. I loved the sex appeal of the bike and even a stock exhaust sounds great for the attention seeker in us all. I drove an hour to get to a mountain road with fresh pavement and plenty of 180 degree corners, it handles great and raw feel of the bike is addicting. I have to admit the display on these bikes is awesome and I wonder why BMW hasn't thought to put a full color digital display like this on our bikes. The things I did notice even with all this giddiness;
1. the brakes are good but not as good.
2. the bike pulls but mine has a bit more pull and another 4K in rpm.
3. the power is not as smooth and setting up maintenance throttle took a bit more concentration.
4. the bike runs hotter even with the exhaust covers. Im not saying the engine runs hotter, just that you feel more of the heat it puts out.
5. the bike sucks down gas! 140Km on a tank cruising about 120-140km/h
6. My a$$ is still sore a couple days later, it is not comfortable after about 30 mins of straight road.

 

have you guys read/watched the reviews on the new 1299? looks pretty badass and they seemed to have addressed all the issues with the 1199. ....makes me wonder if i should dish out the extra 4grand. that thing is sex on wheels.
