low fuel mileage - should I be concerned?

Normally I'm not too worried about fuel mileage but my 2012 seems to be exceptionally thirsty and I'm hoping to hear whether this is a typical experience or I should be concerned. I only have 450 miles on the bike so far and I mostly ride it to and from work (4.5 miles each way). I do take it on the freeway a little bit but primarily city driving. I leave it in either rain or sport mode and I ride it pretty moderately with occasional harder acceleration but mostly relaxed riding. It doesn't seem to be low on power and it doesn't smoke. The recall was performed before I took delivery of the bike but I can't imagine why that would be related. My fuel light always seems to go on 80-90 miles after filling up. On the last two tanks of gas I have run through it, I have calculated 25 mpg. I believe on one of the earlier tanks, which was exclusively freeway riding, I got 40 mpg, which seems fine. The 25 mpg seems abnormally low though - does anyone have any thoughts as to whether this is a problem or not?

Seems fairly normal compared to mine. I'm always in race mode with lots of city driving and my fuel light comes on between 90-100 miles.

On extended rides out in the county I can get close to 120 miles before my fuel light comes on.

Elevation, fuel, riding style, and Tempeture will all play a role in the millage that you get. If fuel economy is important to you, you could always trade in the BMW for a Honda Rukus ;)

I was wondering others ranges too. I'm a heavier rider. I do a good mix of highway n city my r6 I would get 140 miles till my light came on. On the light I could go 32 miles. So that's roughly 170 miles per tank.

Now a bigger s1krr my light comes on between 100 and 110. Then the fuel count down gives me another 30 miles so that's 130-140 miles. Divide by 4.5 is roughly 30 mpg.

Granted its a bigger bike but I was curious as to why so much lower

Seems a bit low for a commute, although perhaps the very short trip works against you. If you let the bike warm up by idling, that could explain it. If so, I'd stop doing this - ride immediately, but gently for the first couple miles.

Overall, I get about 32-45 mpg on mine. The lower number for very high speeds and/or very dense traffic. The high number is steady-state 65 mph cruising. I've occasionally seen the warning light stay off to 140 miles or so but 120 is more typical. But I've never seen less than 100 except at the track.

I get about 35 average in town, but I get about 50 highway. Ive gotten 180+ miles out of a tank. Last weekend on my ride around Mt St Helens, I rode 94 miles through the mountains at a spirited rate and only used 1.5 gallons of fuel. In town seems to be the worst, like your short commute. My commute is 6 miles and I only get abut 120 per tank then.

The mileage capability improves as the miles add up, certainly it's possible to get better mileage after you have a few thousand on it. But as others have said, you can use the highway in second or in sixth, this choice really determines fuel mileage. Short trips are murder too, but your results do seem to be typical.

OK glad to hear I shouldn't be too worried. BTW, I don't let the bike warm up for more than a few seconds while I put my helmet and gloves on, and I'm always in 6th on the freeway. I've been trying to ride fairly slowly and at low rpms since I noticed how the fuel economy is. I just wanted to make sure I shouldn't be worried about something being out of whack with the engine.

Maybe your one-way commute is too short, just like cars... short commutes with cold engine starts simply consumes more gas.

I usually average 110-120 miles before the light comes on, 50/50 freeway and local, with fairly quick accelerations from lights. I'm averaging 36mpg over the last 2500 miles.

Your mileage sounds fine to me...my scooter drinks go juice like it grows on trees...I am on the gas quite a bit so that probably has something to do with it...I have never bothered to check the mileage but it appears to use fuel at a rate just slightly better than a '65 big block (396 425HP) vette I had back in the day, and it got about 9 mpg...lol
