Hi Everyone

I recently bought a 2012 BMW S1000 RR.

When I turn on the ignition key, the RPM needle does not goes up all the way to the redline like how all the bikes should when you just switch it on, it gets stuck between 3000rpm to 6000rpm. You will be able to see that the needle to trying to move up but it feels like something is blocking it and yet at times there are no issues and it goes all the way to redline and back down to 0 smoothly.

During on the road, if I rev over 6k Rpm the needle gets stuck for awhile before moving up again and that is when the reading gets all wrong as when I come to a complete stop, fully clutch in, bike on idle, my rpm needle is at 0.

Have brought it to the workshop and reset my gauge. After resetting it, only the first ignition it will go all the way to redline and back down, after that it gets stuck again for no reasons.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this issue other then replacing the whole dashboard as it is quite expensive to replace it as the rest of the dashboard is working perfectly except for the Tach Needle. I came across a post where a person was saying that it might be the drive motor for the needle that needs replacing.

Thanks in advance for any pointers or suggestion

Typically there is 2 possible issues with clusters that have bad sweeping needles.

The most problem I have seen is a bad capacitor on the motherboard. Its not a SMT component, but it is difficult to remove and replace. I have lots of practice at it after about 25 repairs in this area.

The other possible cause is the needle motor is going bad. That can also be replaced.

I offer the repair of these parts, but you will have to send the ECU, cluster, one key to me in the USA.

Then there is just buying another cluster to be done with these issues, but that creates blinking miles because of the mis-match between ECU and cluster. The dealer cannot rematch miles on 10-14 as it requires software that they no longer can use in expert mode. So to resolve putting a used cluster on the bike requires you sending the ECU, broke cluster, and one key. or you just ride around with blinking miles, and that is really no issue in function and use. The ECU will continue to get the correct miles of the bike and at a later time the cluster and ECU can be re-matched and married.
