I bought a Gopro silver 8 months ago and just now opened it up. I downloaded the update and the thing still doesnt work right. It shuts down after about 3 seconds. Im not real tech savy so any input is appreciated.

Perhaps the battery needs charging? If it's fully charged, then you'll have to go into the menu and see how it's set up. There is an auto off function, and single or multiple picture functions as well as video. Very confusing for sure.
Obvious stuff:
Charge the battery, fully.
You can use the iPhone app to check a lot of the settings if you have the wifi option. If not, check all the configuration.
1. remove and re-insert batt
2. remove and re-insert SD
3. remove and reinsert both batt and SD
4. remove batt, press/hold shutter, insert batt, press on
5. remove batt, connect USB
6. try starting with SD removed
What SD card do you have? Make, model and size.
