Hey
Just want to say that this fix did it for me. There is no start-up rattle anymore. Not even when the bike not being used for 2 days.
It's a 2012 with 18.000 miles on it!

Anyone had any luck with this part also solving the neutral with clutch out (cold or hot, doesn't matter) rattle? I read another thread where that rattle turned out to be cam chain related but the actual fix was not mentioned.

This won't fix a worn clutch basket. Sorry.. For those interested, the new (silver) part is 7mm shorter (more tension). two second install lol.

i installed my manual cam chain tensioner, started the motor and adjusted to where oem normally sounds, not the start up rattle but not too tight either.

little loose is better than a little tight, the problem with oem is during high speed runs suddenly chopping throttle or other things like downshifting too much and dropping the clutch can result in a sudden change of oil pressure just as the maximum amount of force is being exerted on the cam chain tensioner. there is backoff protection which prevents the tensioner from losing tension but it can fail. this happened on a yamaha to a buddy of mine at the track with a pretty much new fj09. although, this is a 1% or less use case where it makes sense to install one

I have 26,000 kms on my 17 model now and engine start up both hot and cold is noisy as hell for approx 3-4 seconds. This has been the case for almost 15,000 km now. I have asked the dealer about this 3 times and each time they tell me it's just normal for the RR and I just need to live with it? @bennymx in your opinion should my horse be a candidate??

mine 16 is a bit noisy, I'll ask my mech to check when I take it for the 20k km service in 1k km.

@McRR for sure. It's not normal. They shouldn't rattle. My 16 started doing it at around 22k. I put the silver one on and it doesn't do it now.
Its a related question. I have the longer tentioner fitted, bike has 40k km now. The distribution chain and rollers, do they need changing if there is engine noise? Are they under warranty? There is nothing about this in The service schedule paper sheet, just another oil/filter change

The timing chain is not under any maintenance schedule. If it is noisy even with the longer cap then the dealer needs to inspect it and decide whether it needs replacing. Warranty coverage will depend on if you have warranty left or of you have service history etc. Its a case by case basis.

Awesome sticky!

My s1000rr just started making cam chain noise for 2 to 3 seconds on start ups.

Do I need to order the tensioner assembly along with silver/grey plug? Or just the silver/grey plug it self?

Thanks in advance!

Much regards

Just the silver plug.

Anyone know where I can order the silver plug online. I’m out of warranty and have no desire paying a dealership to fit one

#MeToo on the cam chain noise

So I just went to pick up my 2015 S1000RR at the dealership, after her scheduled service. The mechanic pointed out a tick-tick-tick noise it sometimes makes. They diagnosed it as a potential issue with the timing chain, and estimated about $1,000 to diagnose and fix fully, as they have to tear the whole engine down. The warranty expired March... Argh.

Regarding this tensioner part, mentioned in this forum: Does it require the whole engine to be torn down, or is this an external install?

Thanks

Its installed externally no tear down required.
this is a close up pic of the Ape manual version . http://www.s1000rrforum.com/forum/b...-general-discussion/16028-those-who-have-installed-ape-cam-chain-tensioner.html

UPDATE:
There is apparently some discussion as to the nature of the noise. Mine is a hard ticking, or clacking, and apparently the typical loose cam chain noise is more of a rattling, which mine does not make. Thus, apparently, the need for a tear-down... I will dig deeper.
