Is it a good idea or necessary to get separate track day insurance if all one is doing is a track day (not timed racing event)? If so, any recommendations? Typical cost?

A crash is a crash no matter on the street, on the racetrack, and on that racetrack as a club timed event vs just making hot laps. Its still a crash.

The issue with some insurance is that they will find a way to not cover all your expenses if you are on a professional built racetrack designed for speed. There are what is called a rider policy that covers events outside of riding on the street. Many high paying job people get these rider policy to cover the event of death, or lost of limbs.

You need track day insurance. Riding on a track is specifically excluded under most moto policies. You will need to specifically have that coverage added, otherwise you and your bike will not be covered if you go down.

What type of bike are you riding? Something super exotic?

I've done many, many track days and raced all sorts of bikes and never had insurance on them. I've crashed race bikes a few times, but never on a trackday. Ultimately, I think if you ride within your limits with a well organized group, and take care of other riders (particularly beginners), then you can keep the risk pretty low. And it you're not riding something exotic, I'm sure you'll find the potential cost of repair * risk factor < the premium.

However, you NEED good health cover and/or loss of work cover. That's the important piece. Don't go out there knowing that if you injure yourself, then you could be down six figures in lost income and hospital bills.

Good feedback thank you all. Type of bike is a regular 21 S1000RR with all the usual Premium Package options including Race Package and Forged Wheels.

One thing that crossed my mind is liability insurance should I be accused of causing someone else damage. Any suggestions/thoughts on this as well? Thanks

I mean, if you do cause someone else to crash or crash into them. The right thing to do would be to help them out in some way. Some financial compensation may be called for. But outside of that no. Everyone understands and accepts the risks. However, if you were being a total spoon, you'll probably be done riding on the track for the day or maybe even longer with that org.

The crashes between bikes I've seen on trackdays most commonly involve someone running up the back of someone else in a braking zone. You can ride to mitigate that risk (somewhat). Or someone runs into a corner too hot and will lose the front while someone else is trailing on the outside of the corner. So the guy on the inside of the corner washes is bike out and takes someone else with him.

Honestly -- it isn't likely you'll have an issue. Just ride within your limits and avoid if there are any guys who look like their riding beyond theirs. Oh, and do work up some skill to get into the advanced group sooner. You'll find riders in that group to be very predictable in most cases.
