Steering Head Nut Failure

I honestly thought this was an expansion slot lol. It's been there forever, the major service never picked it up, then I noticed a clunk in the front end and took it to the head mechanic who sad it was the front rotors. I had the tires replaced last week and they test rode it? Anyway I'm glad because the young mechanic picked up on it. Clunk clunk. He said replace asap and I agree. It's a poxy alloy!!!! What do you guys replace this with, it was suggested some mob can make an Ti one but I imagine that would cost a packet. I'm in AUSTRALIA too btw. I'm tempted to just go to a nut&bolt shop and get a hi-tensile one of some sort.

Gilles do a nice Ti one.
It's not uncommon for these to split.

Seriously, this is the one item that I talked myself out of as pure bling :(
Pro-Bolt do the TI also, didn't know they were in AUS.
Don't get Ali...it splits ;)

Thanks, I went to the probolt site and ordered the Titanium one, $71. I was going to simply spin the old one off and the new on, don't know what I was thinking because I don't have a socket that size anyway and by the looks of the recess where the nut sits I could scratch up the yoke anyway. The nut has those multiple holes in it and BMW probably has a special tool to suit so I though I'd just take it down there. Perhaps the mechanics will do me a quickie and I'll avoid a nasty service fee.

when I did my fork oil I just bought a socket that fits.

Well the nut was $80 and so was the installation. I'm glad I left it to the shop, they have the right tools and went over the whole steering setup and checked it.






How you check the preload accurately I couldn't even guess. In the old days it was tap tap push pull tap tap tap, but on this bike the right tools would be a boon.

I finally found a new set of boots I was happy with too. Across the road at the Honda shop.



Now this was interesting I thought. All the new bikes come lashed down to these carriers, and come in steel boxes too. I said to one of the guys, "You don't send these back to China do you?" "Oh not, we just send them off to the scrap metal dealers" he said. What a waste I thought, especially since most of them had carried those rubbish new Indian's. So many crap bikes being sold now.
