I have to change the stator on my 2017 S1000rr. The BMW Repair Service Manual says to lock the engine at TDC. Does anybody know why it is needed for the stator replacement? Is it really necessary? If it is needed where can I get a locking a pin? BMW only sells it as part of a $300 tool kit.

Maybe it's the same instruction for the rotor, they assume that you change both not just the stator. I can't see that it would be necessary for what you want to do.

Its not necessary to lock the engine on this procedure. I have done it many times.
