Bought a 2015 1000rr to race and trackday. I thought the data logger was a good idea to help me with my laptimes. It turned out to be not so user friendly. My dealer has been trying to get help from BMW with not much success. Anybody on here have a lot of experience with the data logger? It will be a while before I can ride but I thought I might be able to get a contact or 2. Thanks!

It's user hostile. Some of the BMW riders have given up on it and now use an Aim Solo DL. I know those that have made it work are dumping data after every session. Not sure that this is a must, but it seems a bit odd if the memory is that small (or data that huge). Stick with it, there are a few here that use it.

Yes it is a ROYAL PITA to learn to use. I try to download all sessions twice a day when I'm riding(lunch and end of the day) helps keep them logged in correct order and for the proper day.

Havent found a great way to set start/finish line, still bumbling around doing that for each track I'm riding. have an idea on this but won't be able to test until next month.

I've limited the number of channels I try and look at, in order to not go into information over load. I would love to have a track day somewhere that there is an expert at reading the data, and book some time with that person to explain how to get the most out of the system.

I was missing an important step at the beginning in selecting my bike setup, and that thru all of my data into the junk pile when I first started using it.

I found this manual to be close, not exact but helpful:

According to BMW, there is no way to setup the information to imperial from metric.

What I have been told is that you have to buy the FULL 2D version logger software package at $1500 USD. It works with the BMW datalogger hardware. That will allow calculations to be setup via that full version. It changes the .INI and .CCF files to accomplish US measurements.

The start / finish can be set anywhere on the data plot. That way you can see all lap times before pit in which usually kills a lap. Lets take COTA example. This is my warm up lap and you can see the checkered flag over before turn 20, and the actual start finish on the front start. but, that allows that last lap before pit in to be completed with time. you can move the lap pointer to anywhere you want and I have seen best lap calculation change a little just based on where the calculation starts and ends.

Here is another piece of information I found out the hard way.

Don't leave the USB stick in the datalogger and ride with it in there.

The BMW logger never does record directly to the USB memory, it stores the data in a flash memory inside the logger.
Each time the logger recognizes the connection of a memory stick, it checks, if it is FAT32 format USB inserted, if yes it creates the folder “2D-Datarecording”.
After that it stores the current setting in “Default.LDD” in the main folder. And if data recorded, it stores it in a new file.
If the stick is connected while riding the bike, it might loose and regain connection by vibrations, that will lead to unpredictable behavior.

Well, it does.

Well, since the HP BMW logger is a 2D USB Stick Logger with 32MB interval memory, which actually holds at 100Hz up to 200 min of recording, you actually can leave the USB stick connected all the time. What he is actually doing is filling up the 32MB of file/memory every time you start your bike and reaching over 2500 rpm, only issues is that you can lose a few seconds of recording once these 32MB memory is full and he's forced to save it on the stick.

Not sure why your usb stick has a loose connection, never had any issue with the logger so far!

One thing is new is that to make anew usb stick to work you need to connect it to the bike/logger first, switch ignition on before it will be recognized by the computer software.

But since 200min are a lot of recording for one trackday, empty the logger before all your sessions and after and you are fine. It's not designed to capture your journey around North America in one file :wink2:

Hi there,

Best option you have with any problem is to actually ask discret questions :nerd:

And no you can't change km/h into miles or mm into inches or km into yards. All 50+ channels are pre-defined in it's appearance and you can't create new ones either.

Sorry to say that, but you actually have to read the manual very carefully: updating the software as many times as requested, choose your bike model, putting the usb stick in the computer to get the latest firmware for your logger, connect logger to bike, switch ignition on etc. are steps to make your logger work.

I asked 3 question to the BMW HP support and always got a very detailed answer!

So again, try to put your question in words, so we can help you since my logger isn't working isn't helpful :nerd:

can someone using the datalogger confirm if it will automatically recognize start/finish lines in pre-loaded tracks and start new laps every time you pass the finish line ?

or we still need one of those; infra red laptimer module / manually start timer / or the 2D lap trigger ?

Once you set the start finish line in the data logger software and save it as extra file, you can reuse it - it saves 2 GPS coordinates only.
But you can also set it manually and re-positioning it again and again.

THe infra red laptimer module / manually start timer / or the 2D lap trigger are only being used for the laptime being displayed in your dash. This time and whatever start-finish-line these systems are using has nothing to do with the data-logger.

The data-logger is just saving all information which are going over the BMW CAN/LIM bus. The software then creeates even more channels out of these raw information.

The logger computes laptimes on it's on - two totally different systems.

cant find the datalogger plug on the bike ?

just received the datalogger, not sure if i'm missing something here, the DL plug do not fit my bike wiring harness plug, i have a DWA and LED signals, according to manual came with DL this is the plug on the left ? but they don not fit.

DL part on the invocie i ordered is 77538526204-01 , part number on the actual one i received is 77538526199 , is this is the problem ? or there is a another plug i should be looking for in the tail ?

Ok, second picture, bottom black CAN bus connector...It the DL got 2 connectors so you can connect something else there as well. But I guess you got the manual, if not download it from the BMW accessory section which describe how to connect it having a DWA...

manual came with it is surely for 2014 and earlier, it shows a slightly different anti theft unit and plugs are on opposite sides in tail, i searched online for another one could not find it.
few plugs are there in tail, this one in picture, and another one for diagnostic.

I put alarm and wires back in and made a better picture here, DL has 2 connectors, one is identical to one connects to Anti theft, other one should connect to the bike wiring harness (black) but they don't fit !

Installing HP Datalogger on 2016 with LED singals and DWA antitheft

i did read the manual, problem is the manuals came with Data logger has different pictures for different bike configs, without DWA, with LED, etc) and pictures there are small and different than 2016, it mentions that models with LED signals & DWA should remove the tail completely to connect and install data logger.

its funny how its a simple plug in front of me but i was searching for a plug (hidden somewhere) on the sides as DL manual says :grin2:
i assumed its just like the 2D GPS laptrigger plug front of fork i installed judt before DL, which it took me few minutes to install.

anyways i finally got it, its really never simply explained in manual so for anyone installing the DL to 15016 with LED signals and DWA you need to connect BOTH DL plugs.

- remove anti theft plug
- connect short DL plug to anti theft plug.
- connect long DL plug to antitheft.
if you have passenger cover you can simply position the DL out on the tail and the cover will not push on the wires, thanks to the lousy fit BMW probably considered for this setup :grin2:

otherwise, you will have to remove the tail and slide the DL from the outside.
i'm atatching a picture, for the process :grin2:, in case someone gets similar brain freeze moment like me. ..

here is a thread that was to be a resource type informational postings.. but , it does not get updated much.

http://www.s1000rrforum.com/forum/b...rum/bmw-s1000rr-general-discussion/183185-datalogger-instruction-resources.html

There is a post by me on how to set the start finish of all that one big pile of data that downloads. Then there is a video on it too by Dylan.

As to setting the start finish via GPS coordinates before you get to a track, I never figured that one out. Since my HP Datalogger still does not display the laps on my cluster like the PZRacing GPS module does... I just use the STI for real time look at laptimes and I can set a GPS start finish line on it before I get to a track. However it starts laptimes also with speed and I use 60MPH so just after pit out it starts logging.

The BMW AnnaLiza is limited in functions compared to the full 2D version that is about $900.
