Hey all, another quick question for those with more experience. I noticed on the BMW shop manual it showed the need for a tool to measure the distance between bearings in the front - if I recall correctly. Is this tool necessary for an install or can I just drop (lol, pound) one bearing into one side, install the internal sleeve, then drop the other one on the other side until the inner race is on the sleeve?
I think I installed them incorrectly the first time around as they already seem to be bad (squaking and notched - I may have sideloaded the bearings?)
Yes there is a tool. I did mine recently and just knocked the old ones out with a punch and then fitted the new ones by just tapping them in with a socket that fits the outside diameter. Home is home. No measurements. The tool just presses them all the way in. Tapping them in with a socket on the outside does the same job. Doesn't damage them.
It really helps to heat the hub to 200 degrees F. less damage done coming out and going in. I have all the factory tools for this but used to do it the way posted on my Harley. The spacer only works if the first bearing is bottomed out. Be aware.
Recently did my OZ Racing forged wheels without special tools. Put bearings in the freezer for 30 mins and heat the hub up with a hot air gun (approx 70 deg C if you have a gauge). Works a treat and the bearings fall in. Have a suitable socket ready to gently tap the bearing into place in case the heat from the hub gets to the bearing before it is bottomed out and home. If the bearing goes in straight then won't be required but we all know if it has tits or tires then quite often things don't go to plan haha.
So I did (re)replace the bearings, this time the left side first then the right until it hit the spacer - only to find out that the actual noise I was hearing was that i bent the front wheel speed sensor metal so it was hitting the abs ring . Bent it back and no problems since - its quite delicate metal so be aware when changing the front wheel (duh). Sensor seems to be in good shape so far - no errors, wheelie detection working.
I just replaced on my hp4, but sorry that is not English...
