Flashing ABS and Traction Control

Morning all. Still looking for the right bike and may have found one but I have some concerns regarding the ABS and Traction lights in the cluster. They both flash together when the ignition is turned to on and when the engine is running. I took it for a test drive and cannot rmemember seeing them while I drove.. . too busy watching the landscape blur. Damn these bikes are missiles, I totally get the attraction. Anyway, they just contine to flash when the bike is stationary so that seemed odd to me. Infication of a problem or is this typical? Incidentally, I am told it has a “power commander” installed but as I understand that would be a ecu remapping tool so I cannot see how that could affect the ABS or Traction.

The ABS self test happens when you turn on the ignition and completes after you have travelled a few meters.

The two lights flashing when the bike is turned on and stationary is perfectly normal. Both lights should turn off once the bike hits like 5 mph, but no cause for concern at this point.

This is the correct answer.

Key on VSS/ABS self test mode, take off and roll 5-10 meters tells the system the VSS is all functioning correctly. If you happen to ever change the rear wheel especially, you can damage the VSS attached to the brake caliper bracket. Then if you happen to loosen the front forks left side bushing and mess up the spacing on the front wheel, this can cause the VSS to not pick up correctly too. So, BMW made the system to self check every time you key off and key back on.

You can read/download the owner's manual online. Do not go to a test ride unprepared.
