Great post on another forum sharing his experience with TPMS.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

1. The Tee went for a long assed ride on the Kawi Concours all up and down Northern California on Friday, racking up about 500 miles or so, terminating in Woodland to visit a friend. Wishing to avoid the Bay Area traffic on the Eastbound I-80, the Tee opted for the 128 route over Lake Berryessa and tore up some fine ass twisties.

2. Somewhere between Winters and Davis on a long ass back country road, "TPMS Alert: Low Pressure Rear Tire 28 psi" flashed on the display. Holy mother****ing **** I said to myself, probably out loud even. This is a BAAAD place for a flat tire. I had contemplated carrying a plug kit and portable compressor on my bike but had not procured such items yet.

3. Thinking.... let's get as close to Davis as we can before we hop off and shut down. "TPMS Alert.... Rear Tire 27 psi" not good, not good. Keep on trucking. Pressure steadily kept getting lower. Hold on baby, hold on, just let me make it to a gas station.

4. Made it to the gas station with 18 psi left. Rear tire was HELLA wobbly. Shut down next to the air. Throw the bike on the center stand, evaluate the problem. Sho 'nuf they it is, piece of metal embedded in the tire. Run inside. Hmmmmm..... LUCK! They had a small tire plug kit on the shelf! And a pair of pliers. Came with three plugs and a tube of cement.

5. It took the reaming tool AND the pliers to get this piece of metal out. Oh holy mother of Jesus that was a big assed mother****er in there, it appeared to be some sort of broken steel ring of some sort that put a quarter inch wide gash in the tire. That looks bad. Real bad. Oh well, what can you do. I stick the plug in there, inflate the tire, clean up and go.

6. I set the display to TPMS so I can monitor pressures. F42 R45. Good. Start riding. R46. Good. R45. Good..... chug along for maybe three or four miles. R40. Not good. Bad, real bad. "TPMS Alert: Rear Tire 26 psi." Oh ****! I just happened to pass by another gas station. Pull in there. Sure enough, the plug blew out (the hole was just TOO big to be repairable.) I stuck the remaining two plugs in the hole. They went in. But, I could not get the air at the gas station to work no matter how hard I tried because the nozzle wouldn't fit in the space of the rim. Why Kawasaki likes to put the valve in the dead center of the rim with no clearance to fit a conventional air nozzle I don't know but they did.

7. Gave up, called a tow truck. At that point I just deemed the tire to be unsuitable for a freeway run anyway, probably best the air didn't work. Too far to go back to Oakland, so I just had it towed to my friends place in Woodland, figured I'd get a new tire or something the next day. Spent most of today running around finding the correct tire and size, and finding a place to mount it.

Analysis: Neither the leak in the tire or the blowout of the plug was ever a real safety issue, although I suppose it could have been if I was in a heavy lean on a turn. I would have caught the low pressure issue before it became unsafe. What TPMS DID allow me to do give me another tool for planning, so I could end up in a more favorable spot than I would have without it. If I didn't have it, I probably would have just parked the bike on the side of the road and tried calling someone for help. Good luck with that.

I have been ambivolent (I just learned that word the other day, I'm using it a lot in conversation now) about TPMS but now I'm convinced it's the shizz.
