Michelin Power Pure employ unique construction techniques to provide excellent grip, exceptional tire life and fast warm-up – all in a design that’s lighter than the same class of tires from other manufacturers. Ultimately these benefit the rider by increasing his or her safety and they’re suitable for the street or trackday rider.

Starting with fast warm-up - consistent and predictable grip is easily obtained. In the center of the tire, a full-slick area provides the most traction possible for both hard acceleration and stopping when in an upright position. When cornering at lean angles of 40˚+, an additional full-slick area at the edge of the tire maximizes grip when you need it most. The Power Pure is Michelin’s second-generation 2CT tire and it has a different grip compound composition than the original Michelin Pilot Power 2CTs. This new design allows the softer part of the tire to come into contact with the pavement earlier at less lean which, not only permits better grip at mild lean angles, but also evens out tire wire for enhanced longevity.

This image depicts the differences in the Michelin Power Pure’s tread compound mixture compared to that of the Pilot Power 2CT. With the Power Pure rear tire, at 20˚ of lean, 98% of traction comes from the softer, more grippy outer compound. Notice that the previous generation Pilot Power 2CT require much greater angles of lean before its softer compound comes into contact with the pavement.


Michelin Power Pure tires are over two pounds lighter than similar tires from different manufacturers! While two pounds might not sound like much, when the location of this mass is taken into account, it adds up to a noticeable improvement in handling and quicker steering as there is less spinning mass to push around. Michelin engineers achieved this by reducing the number of plies within the tire’s carcass without sacrificing stability to provide predictable handling at high speeds and high angles of lean. As an added benefit, lighter tires also make it easier for your bike’s suspension to do its job since it does not have to work as hard to keep the tires in contact with the ground.

In the diagrams below you can clearly see the partitions of each different type of compound within the Michelin Power Pure 2CT tires. The precise makeup of these compounds for the front and rear tires differs significantly to provide the most amount of grip, maximize longevity yet, at the same time, give the rider maximum feedback, predictable handling and control.

Starting with the rear, 20% of the 2CT compound is of the harder, longer-wearing material located directly in the center of the tire. The remaining 80% flanks this central strip equally at either side with a softer, grippier compound. When the bike is perfectly upright, the majority of grip comes from the harder compound but at just 20° of lean, 98% of grip comes from the softer, shoulder compound. This arrangement is derived to give the rider confidence when winding on the gas leaving a corner, all without being subject to poor wear characteristics associated with a single-compound tire.


In addition to the smart placement of various grip formulas, Michelin Power Pure tires have slick areas built into the DOT-legal tread patterns in the center and near the shoulders of both, the front and rear tires. At lean angles beyond 40°, the full slick area ensures maximum traction when you need it most.


The front tire has a super-soft/soft/super-soft 2CT compound distribution of 25%/50%/25% yet, because of its steeper profile, only 24° of lean is required to start getting into the maxi-grip compound. This design provides a front tire that resists “cupping” yet is strong enough to be stable when maximum braking force is applied.
