Default Bike Numbers?

Okay, so I’ll go ahead and suffer the embarrassment of asking this here. Why do some guys have numbers on their bikes at the track and some don’t?

William

I'll add a little to that though... I ran numbers on my track bike prior to racing while just doing track days. Reason being is that the track generally wants to ensure they can identify you in case something happens on the track and they "meatball" you and need to have a talk w/you. So some times, they'll end up putting numbers on your windscreen (with some kind of wax marker thing - which can scratch it)... so I've always just put my own numbers on. If you're wanting something temporary, just get some black electrical tape and may a number out of it on your nose section.

In fact in my Avatar <---- to the left, you can see the #77 on the nose of my bike. That was prior to racing.

Some trackday organizers require numbers to identify riders, in case they have to radio marshalls on the track to black-flag them, etc. Also, track-side photographers organize their pictures/packages by session and number to make it easier to purchase them.

we (NESBA) require numbers so we can identify someone as we ride with many riders at once and like to be able to acknowledge/critique during the break. race orgs like to have numbers on the helmet so they can identify someone in case of a crash.

Google "vinyl signs" in your area. Also, check the local track/racing forums as well, what often happens is that one guy will buy a vinyl cutter to cut his own race numbers, and look to make back his investment by offering to cut numbers for other racers/trackday riders as a service.

As for choosing your own number, most race/trackday organizers let you do it if its not already taken. Some clubs will insist you use your member number as a race number for consistency on the track.

And that's another reason i asked, i just got a membership with NESBA and i was filling out the forms and it was asking for a bike number. Also, whats the proper placement? Front windscreen and rear?

Thanks

William

you can use vinyl numbers or just tape and yes, front and rear where they are easy to read. enjoy and use the CRs to your advantage, they are there to help!!! btw, check out www.nesba.com and look for the track talk forum.. all your questions can be answered there.
