Default Taping my headlights

I've scheduled a 2 day TrackDay weekend in May. I plan to put the S1000 on the track one'a those days and would like to know if the blue painter's tape will be ok to use over the headlights. I have HID's and fear they'll melt the tape. For now this maybe the only trackday I run on this bike and want to avoid spending the money on the Alpha Racing plug-set.
TIA

I could be wrong but I believe the HID's create less heat on the front clear lens than the regular Halogen bulbs. I tested two S1's side by side, and the HID seemed cooler. You should be fine...

You can pull fuses 4&5 to kill the beams.

I hate taping lights. That has to be the most obsolete prep rule out there. The Lexan lenses of our bikes are considerably *more* shatter-resistant than the plastics - and you think if you hit hard enough to break them that flimsy painter's tape is going to hold everything together?!? Total stupid archaic waste of time.

It's so easy to unplug both headlights, and there's even a retaining clip right above the plug to hold them in place so no worries about them flopping around near the forks. Unplugging the brake light takes care of that for on track use also. If you want to still have your water temperature displayed on the dash, and not the LAMPF/R! error, you can have your BMW dealer disable the lamp error message for all the lights. It's a quick procedure by hooking up their diagnostic computer and checking the appropriate box. Viperclaw was nice enough to post that solution some time ago.

Thanks for your replies, I plan to take it to my dealer to disable the LAMPF error while they're unplugged.

Hi,

Has anyone actually done this? I called my dealer and they couldn't comprehend why I'd want to do this and said they couldnt do it. since they haven't been straight forward with other information in the past, I take what they say w/ a grain of salt.

It'd be nice to have confirmation that someone was able to disable this pointless error/warning on their bike.

Anyone?

I put painters tape and pulled fuses, The small running lights were on. So I had to put duck tape over painters tape to satisfy the track officials.

Here's some info I got from viperclaw who has done it on several bikes. This was from memory so if it's not the exact procedure he said it'll get your dealer on the right track.

They have to use the MOSS PC. Go into ISTA P, the programming part. Go to Vehicle and then go to CKM--car key memory. Scroll to the bottom and check the last box, says something like lamp check feature. There are two boxes in this subgroup and the first is the factory setting. Have them choose the second box which will turn the self check function off. Click on the lower right box at the bottom of the screen, should be a Continue or Accept measures plan. Then exit programming.
