Default Medical Insurance

Ok this is a thread about medical (including disability and life, but not motorcycle) insurance. Many of us do track days and others race. Do we all have policies that cover accidents on the track? I've seen too many folks get chopper rides to ICUs and, even without a life flight, the bills could add up quickly. So post up...if your policy covers these "extreme sports," premium, policy information insurance company, etc.

Here's a good article that's worth a read.

My experience has been that if it has to do with trackdays, you're usually OK. It's when you move over to the grid and start racing that you may have exclusions on your policies that can royally screw you!

Other things to check, for those that are racing... Do you have exclusions on your life insurance or your disability that would prevent a payout.

I've gone through all of this and for my personal situation have concluded:
  • Life Insurance - I'm good there, no exclusions since I've had the policy for so long.
  • Disability - Same as life... no issues
  • Health Insurance - I fall under my company's Group Policy and there are no exclusions there, just the normal deductibles and copays.
  • Accident Coverage - Kinda like AFLAC... this DOES exclude racing!
  • Gap Coverage - Basically tries to help cover your deductible... I have a $3,000 deductible on my health that I would have to come out of pocket with first prior to my insurance kicking in if I had a Hospital stay. My Gap does NOT cover racing!

My health insurance doesnt care about racing or track days.

However, part of my life insurance policy 2 years ago was that I would not do any racing, Track days were fine.

This program costs $50-60 a year and eliminates the cost of the helicopter ride. Covered by 3 different EMS companies with ~160 helicopters around the US. Check the map. If they're near where you ride, track, race....might be good.
