Default EWS! Code

I recently had an EWS Code yesterday on my Motorsport bike with only 514 miles on it. I was was shocked this code popped up on such a new bike and it would not start with either master key. The EWS code zeros out the computer chip to the keys and will not allow the bike to start. Has anyone else had this problem with their bike? I got the bike home, but Blue Moon is not open until Tuesday and BMW Roadside Assitance could not help me at all.

Make sure you only have one key in the ignition--the type for the bike. Even the plastic emergency key has a chip in it. IF you have more than one in the area of the "ring antennae" the ECU may be confused and throw the EWS code in the dash. IF that is not the issue it could be the antennae is butt. Get it to the dealers and it can be replaced relatively easily. Probably an hours wait.

Make sure there are no "fast pass" type things on the key ring also. I usually just have a ring with a simple key tag and the ignition key. When off the bike I put that ring onto my bigger key ring with all other keys.

When it happened, I didn't have any other key with me. I had to call my wife to bring the other master key from home and it still gave the same code EWS! It will be at the dealership on Tuesday to resolve the problem. I'm just glad it happened at a friends shop instead of downtown Atlanta where I was heading when it would not start. What causes this problem and how can I prevent it from happenining again?

Probably the antenna. Couple years ago they had a bad batch on a lot of bikes and they were replaced under a warranty campaign--kind of a recall but not a Federal recall. This is the first case I've seen on an S1. Once it fails it usually does not come back.

do a search on any 1200GS forum and you will see the early 1200s were plagued by this problem. My dealer told me they have more or cleared it up by now so the S1000s wont be effected but obviously not

Roadside Assistance picked up my bike this morning and took it to the dealer in my area. I really hope it does not come back again once it's fixed, because I'd hate to be in the middle of no where and get stranded.
