Default Service Due Indicator

ok, so according to the Owners Manual, the Service-due Iindicator in the instrument cluster works as follows:"If the next service is due in less than one month, the date for the next service is shown briefly after the Pre-Ride Check completes".

Mine shows a next service due date of Dec 2011 (I have done 8000kms and the last service was at 1000kms in December last year) briefly after the Pre Ride check (heck - don't tell me it is November already!). I (think I) have only just noticed this and it may have just appeared after a bit of a strange momentary electrical problem I had the other day. I jumped on the bike, turned it on and started the engine. The bike made a noise like the warning it gives if the alarm has been triggered earlier (it is the stock BMW alarm - was fitted by the dealer but not ordered with it on). The engine ran then cut out after 2 seconds. The red alarm light was flashing twice in succession over and over again and each time it did this, the neutral light either dulled or went brighter (cant remember which). I turned the key off and restarted and it has behaved itself in the 4 or so rides I have done since.

So question 1. Why is my service date showing so far in advance? Question 2.
Any thought on the electircal wierdness? I have some thoughts: a) the alarm was part way through sounding when I started the bike and hence didn't react normally b) a battery problem with the alarm or bike c) check all connections into the alarm - try and replicate fault d) take it to the dealer and report the problem - get it checked for faults.

Makes you think about how much techo wizardy is between you and a bigger problem (had thoughts of cutting out on the freeway or the ABS locking the rear wheel or the fly by wire engaging fully!!)

After the initial 600 mile run-in service, my service indicator was set to May 2000. Yes, the year 2000. I think it's likely that I interrupted this setting by removing the battery for winter storage.

Mine is doing this also with a date of Nov 2011. Read a little further and the manual also states that if your bike is exhibiting this behavior then there was likely an extended electrical disconnection, and the ecu date needs to be adjusted by a tech. I had no such disconnection, so mine was probably not set right from the beginning either.

Default Service Date

Mine has been saying "Oct 2011" for over a month (started in July).
I have a GS-911, will note this in my service records, ask the dealer why, then reset the date to see if it goes away for a couple of weeks. How annoying.

I am thinking your "alarm" issue may have been caused by a triggered incident (or two), or it put itself to sleep after too long between rides. Now that it is reset, it's gone away. I don't have an OEM alarm - too bulky, too problematic, and too few real good features.

quote [Read a little further and the manual also states that if your bike is exhibiting this behavior then there was likely an extended electrical disconnection, and the ecu date needs to be adjusted by a tech.] I just read a bit further on in the manual where it talks about a battery disconnection for a prolonged period of time. I commute on my bike so it is used at least 3-4 times every week. Hasn't been unused for more than a week whilst I was away once and the battery seems to be in very good condition. Am starting to think that the 'alarm issue' I had the other day may have caused some electircal event that may have caused this. Will take to dealer for them to have a look. thanks all
