Default S1000rr race car project

Hi I am a Hillclimb and sprint racer in the UK and planning on building a S1000rr powered car over the winter, I have allready got the car and a S1000rr engine minus looms and ecu.

Can anyone point me in the direction of any engine manuals/details, as firstly I need to try and get my head around what sensors are actually directly attached to the engine and then to figure out the best way to get it running.

From the research so far it looks like stand alone ecu all the way although I could be wrong.

why would you need a standalone ecu? unless you plan on boosting it there is no reason to go standalone. probably a good idea to find an ecu/harness off a non abs/dtc bike unless you plan on transplanting that stuff on the kart also.

post up pics!

Just a few things that spring to mind.I suggest you speak to a few people.Bear in mind these are my thoughts-they may not be gospel!

The biggest problem I can see is,if you use the BMW ecu and the adaptive values need to be set(which they will if you do not have the original)you will need to take the car to a BMW bike dealer for them to reflash the ecu.

As you do not have an ecu I suggest you buy a loom and get the HP kit ecu and software, although you may have to buy a full akrapovic system with it.Apparently,it is possible to buy the HP kit without exhaust, though officially you can't.It depends on the dealer.Bear in mind, though, this will still need to be activated by a dealer,on the car.

I suggest you find a good dealer(preferably one with racing connections e.g Park Lane,Clarkes etc)and have a chat with them explaining what you are doing.

A stand alone ecu is probably the least aggro as you can use which sensors you want and treat it like most modern engines. However, whether you could use the variable inlets, knock sensors etc.I know not. Also bear in mind,as standard, the BMW ecu is mapped to reduce power in the lower gears(although this can be altered on the HP ecu).

If you go the aftermarket ecu route then Specialist Components in Norfolk(01953 859785)have used their ecu on some unusual things!.It may be worth chatting with them.
I would imagine an original loom would still be useful,if only for the connectors. If you go with the BMW ecu I would get the loom with the DTC/ABS(better availability)-why not attempt to have traction control too!(Obviously,as is,it would only work on two wheels and you would need sensors and rings and tyre sizes may present a problem)

Hope that's given you something to think about.

retaining abs/dtc on a project like this would def require a standalone like motec.

The s1000rr has a two part loom I take it one is for the main engine sensors to get it running?

Thats intresting about how the standard ecu restricts power in the lower gears hmmmm

Not intrested in running traction or anything too trick, the exhaust system would be a bespoke

I will also need to mod the sump for oil surge

What I really need to find is an engine manual

I believe it is a 2 part loom
I would imagine the sump only needs a simple baffle-wheelies and lean angles are no problem.
I seem to remember when gsxr1000 engines were used there were problems when not using the bikes oil cooler-probably easier to use the BM one.
On giving it some more thought I would favour a standalone ecu.Probably cheaper anyway. The std ecu doesn't allow full throttle until 10000 rpm. Also I wouldn't think the variable inlet trumpets are necessary on a kitcar.Trumpet length could be played with on the rolling road to suit the car.
As far as I am aware, the only manuals available are the CD,s for sale on ebay. These are definitely worth having.
