Stock is fine for many street riders and it's generally not till you get into some pretty aggressive riding that you see some of the benefits to aftermarket rearsets. The following are the pluses IMO to aftermarket rearsets:
  • Usually provide better grip, less chance of your boot sliding around or off
  • They are adjustable, so they suit a wider variety of riders and foot positions/preferences as well as help prevent you from dragging hard parts (i.e. the pegs).
  • They are fixed pegs, not hinged. The downfall to this is that if you get down low enough in a turn, the hinged ones are more forgiving whereas the fixed can lead to a world of hurt. However, the plus is that if the bike goes down, it provides another fixed feature for protection on your frame, swingarm, plastics, etc.
  • You can use them to put jack stands under in case you need to get the weight off your swingarm and/or shock.
  • Replacement parts are usually cheaper than the factory rearsets.

Just how much adjustment is there?

Depends on the manufacturer, for instance Woodcraft's are 12-way adjustable.

For most bikes, if you wear Full Race boots when you ride, you'll want rearsets in order to adjust to fit the boot, as they aren't terribly flexible.

On my s1000rr, they happen to be set up perfectly for my boots stock, but I'll still throw a set on to get my knees up higher and for added frame protection.

What Hollywood said ^^^...

I am using Vortex on my race bikes (R6) and they say they can go from stock to 20mm up and 20mm back in 10mm increments. I'm running Gilles on my S1 and I have forgotten what they say.

I guess since I have never replaced any rear sets, I find it difficult to see how 2cm is going to make that much of a difference.
Must be one of those things that you won't know untill you put it on and try.

The main reason I change them is that the stock rear sets will drag and hitting hard parts on the ground is never a good feeling

I can't imagine finding a peg in contact w/the asphalt... that could make for a really bad day. I drug my toe slider during my last race and that made me nervous enough considering the peg is really close to that. I tried to get less lazy w/my body position after that and not do that any more
