Exclamation Indian gearbox for BMW

In the latest australian motorcycle news (vol 60 no 22) it was reported that BMW Motorrad has just signed a deal on the 26th April with Indian based manufacturer Hero Motors to supply gearboxes for all the German brands motorcycle products.

Also stated that usually, components such as engines and transmissions are made by BMW itself, as they involve significantly advanced technology that's best controlled in-house.

According to Pankaj Munjal, managing director of Hero Motors, however: "We have acheived the expertise. Bmw Motorrad will source gearboxes from us for products it sell globally."

WOW... That does not give me a warm and fuzzy feeling for future products. I personally have delt with India design and manufacturing in the past. At first it seems like a good idea, but the problems far out weighed the cost savings very quickly. BMW is making a mistake here in my opinion. I'm even more suprized that the Germans decided to go that route. Typically the german mind set is that nothing is better than german design and manufacturing. :-)

The current gearbox is not made by BMW but is german made. Hero already makes other parts for the BMW bike line apparently??
