Default Need some input

Hi everyoneso I'm looking at getting another s1000rr (salvaged title) for track use and putting my current bike back on the road, So I went to see a wecked s1000rr that had a lowside on the left side, Altenator cover was ground down hard, even has some holes in it, Now my problem is the bike has oil all over the swing arm, Looks like while it was sliding the oil was coming out and with the wind it sprayed the arm, Now my question is where did that oil come from, As the altenator dosent have oil in it, Second thing the oil level glass is emplty, So looks like alot of oil came out of the bike,

The bike is a insurance bike so I dont hae history on the bike, I dont wanna grab this bike and have to rebuild a motor, Any ideas where that oil came from, ???? also the oil feed line for the oil cooler (looks ok) but who knows,

The only oil on the bike will be from the motor. The oil lubes everything. There is a oil cooler below the radiator. Could be a hose coming from that if you cant find a hole in the motor or clutch assembly for the oil to leak out of.

I found out that the altenator cover has oil behind it I thought that it was dry all the time could all the oil have come from the cover having a hole in it?

i would say 'yes' without knowing for sure...seems to me a lot of racers run an aftermarket alt cover as probably required by the track...to prevent damage from a crash causing oil to spill onto the racetrack.

I'd be surprised if the oil came out of a hole in the alternator cover and covered the swingarm while the bike was sliding.

An alternative explanation would be that the bike was towed on a flat bed on its side and that while being towed on its side oil leaked out of the hole in the cover and got blown back and covered the swingarm.

If you've ever seen how a salvage bike gets treated in towing, you'd be amazed. The tow operators aren't very well set up to tow bikes upright. It is not too uncommon for them to just lay them over or even to hook them with a winch and drag them over on the damaged side and strap them down.

Can't say for sure, but it wouldn't surprise me either....

The question is dose the left side cover hold oil? If so the the oil came from that hole during transtor or crash, I just wanna know the oil came from the cover or not, I'm scared the block might be crack behind the cover,

Your talking about the alternator/left side engine cover? The one with the BMW emblem on it right? Its gotta have oil behind it because mine leaks oil. And yes...while riding it sprays all over the damned place, all over my chain and onto swing arm and the back tire.
