S1000RR HP, mid 2012 limited release ?
I was at my local bike shop the other day and my friend who works there said because of the new Ducati Panigale's stealing some of the beloved S1000RR's thunder, that he has reliable intel that BMW will be releasing a limited production run, sometime mid 2012 time frame, perhaps July that will attempt to match or surpass the Ducati's performance. He said they will call it the S1000RR HP with the following list of upgrades:
- Full Ohlins latest race suspension
- Brembo's lightest, latest monoblocks
- lighter wheels, aluminum or possible carbon
- engine mods to push to 200 rwhp, new mapping
- frame, swingarm, front suspension, steering head mods to handle the extra hp
- distinctive body panel upgrades, carbon fiber bits everywhere
Let's use this thread to post teaser's, press releases, rider impressions, etc...
It ought to be an interesting year.
Just for comparison here is Ducati's summary video of all of the details of the Panigale.

I would not be surprised if Ducati did actually come out with a super bike just so they could say they have a faster 1000cc than BMW, but you also have to keep in mind that it is an Italian bike maker. Their prices are through the roof and they will not be able to compete with BMW or Japanese manufacturers in pricing. That's why it would be a limited production bike that the "average Joe" can't afford. You won't see it racing and you definitely would not see it on the drag strip, so why would they do it? Just so a few Ducati owner's can say they have a bike faster than the BMW S1000RR, but it will never have the balls to really prove itself worldwide.

JG,
By limited production numbers I am talking the usual 500 to 1000 units here, more likely a proof of concept above all else. I am sure some wealthy street riders will snap them up if they can get their hands on one, but I believe it more a statement as if to say to Ducati, "we can and just did one up your one up, and at a cheaper price point. I may be full of BS. Lets wait and see what happens. For the record I love my customized 2011 BMW S1000RR with full ohlins, paint, powder coat, 34 mods in all too many to mention here. I will never fully grow into it, let alone grow OUT of it.

I fully agree with you, because you made a significant point "in limited numbers" and that automatically means that with the Ducati name the prices will be as high as a "Georgia pine tree." I love my BMW S1000RR and love how she is an absolute beast on the drag strip, but I sell BMW cars for a living. Everyone is always doing their best to out do BMW either with their cars or motorcycles, but reliablity, dependabilty, cost of ownership, and just being the Ultimate Driving Machine cannot be beaten.
