Seems like a great idea... there's been discussion on the forum about it already - the consensus is that it is likely doubtful to happen.

I'm sure at some point, someone will come up with something 1st generation owners can purchase to get the 2nd generation parameters.

The standard ecu can be re-programmed-the problem is finding someone to do it.I would imagine, once the 2012 bike is available, someone clued up with the HP software will be able to read the ecu and copy those settings to the earlier bike.

If you purchased the HP ecu,I would imagine BMW could put the new program in,though whether they would is another issue. If they would then in theory it should not affect any warranty.

HP ECU voids the warranty.

The ECU is ordered by the bike's VIN. It is still uncertain as to whether the older bikes can be updated. We haven't even seen a 2012 yet and they won't be in for at least two more months. I'm sure once they are in that we will have more definite information. As of now it is all speculation--and hopes .

2012 ECU is NOT backwards compatible...
When would NOW be a good time to trade up???

I'd view the chances of a 2012 ECU fitting a 2010-2011 bike as essentially zero. The changes are WAY too extensive and involve hardware as well as software. Embedded programming on a motorcycle is VERY application and hardware dependent - these systems are not designed to be modular and swappable like a consumer PC.

I do not think that the 2012 has hardware updates except the heated grips and the best lap light.Same engine, same ABS/DTC unit but different settings.I do know if BMW will allow via software the update. We do not know yet how much better the antiwheelie DTC is.Personaly I do not care for antiwheelie because in the track I use SLICK mode that allows it for 5sec.I am interesting in the traction control and how much better it became.
