Have the USA dealer change it from mph to kph prior to him leaving the US. The other thing I might wonder about (but unfamiliar with) is the difference if fuel from the US to other countries and whether or not anything needs to be done there. Honestly not sure.

Thialand may not be as strict but when I took my bike to Japan I had to get a "brake certificate" from the corprate office before they would let me ride it. Real pain in the butt. Most bikes you can change the speedo back and forth between MPH and KPH by pushing a button. You CANNOT change the odometer at all. Leaves the factory in MPH it will stay that way.

I have heard of folks over here in the US changing bikes from KPH to MPH or vice-a-versa as well as changing the clock from 12hr time to military/24hr time... with no issues. Can't speak for what they do on the other side of the pond.

Don't know.... sorry. Maybe someone else will chime in. You might try sending an e-mail to BMW Corporate over there and seeing what they say.

The ECU won't be "locked" to any particular country the bike is programmed or serviced in with the BMW computer.

Possibly the service thing he is wondering about is the service light? It comes on after one year or after 6,000 miles have been put on the odometer--from the last time the "timer" has been set.

The BMW computer--called the MOSS PC--is connected to the internet and to BMW so any "updated" to programming will be made available. I haven't seen any actual updates for the S1000RR in the two years it has been out.

He can get the miles per hour changed to km per hour, the odometer changed from miles to kilometers, the time changed from 12 to 24, have the "lamp" error turned off--allows lights to be disconnected (turn signals and such) to be removed for track riding without the "lamp" light coming on in the dash where the engine temp is located. The self canceling time/distance of the turn signals can be changed also but they are set from the factory to the shortest cancelling time and distance.

He shouldn't worry about it being "locked" to any shop. There are many BMW riders that tour around the world taking their bikes to different shops for work. Won't be a problem.
