Default Damper strip down

Found time to dismantle the damper at last!!! A few pics to show the set up.
Firstly, its not pressurised. The rod which runs through the middle has a fixed, circular, sealed (o-ring) unit in the centre with 2 holes which allows and restricts the fluid as it passes through when the rod slides end to end (lock to lock). Either side of this is a gold coloured (brass?) unit which is fixed at both end of the outer casing directly behind the seal. This brass unit has a sponge insert (like an o-ring). There is then a thick retaining washer and 'c' clip holds the lot in place. I don't know what this brass piece could do, cavitation? Soften the initial fluid transfer?
Anybody have any contacts to find out what fluid is used and what could be recommended for increased damping?

My guess is that the brass component keeps the rod somewhat centered in the tube of the damper. This would keep side pressure off of the seal so that it won't leak.
Just a guess.

Might just be a bumper to soften hitting the stops.

Would the sponge help filter any shavings?
