Default Ohlins 30 MM review

Well to start off with the roads still have allot of gravel in them so I only found a few places to push it hard.

Rebound dampening is a night and day improvement over stock, you feel as if the forks are working as fast as you can go to keep contact with the ground almost gluing themselves to the pavement

brake dive is gone, I even tried to bottom the forks out on the binders they just took it and kept going

compression dampening felt a bit harsh, and I did not bring an allen wrench to adjust it, so i'll just chock that up for now to lack of forethought on my part
Note: next time bring alan wrench

I should add, I have not even set proper sag on the forks just a quick sip-tie check said it was at 40-mm out of the box and all knob's (comp and rebound) where as they came from Kyle Racing

on a scale of 1-10 compared to the stock forks I have to give the 30mm cartridge kit's a 94.7....... these things are so win, it's not even funny!

I just bought a gsxr-600 race bike (fully prep) the suspension was setup by GMD computrack. Im picking it in two weeks and since im driving 27 hours one way and 27 back to grap my baby I was considering taking my bmw s1000r also for a upgrade. Ohlins shock, 30mm kit & damper, plus springs, oil and chasis setup from a mayor expert in sunspension toning, i was quoted $3400 dlls...since my s1000rr first was intended for racing and not any more since I prefered racing 600 superstock I dont know if doing such expence will be a good idea...but my ego tells me to go for it

$3400? WOW! Kyle Racing is selling a kit you get the 30mm cartage's and a TTX shock for I think he said just over 2k

I did not go that route because my wife bought me a Penske 8987 triple for Christmas

Did you installed the 30mm kit yourself? Is it a aceptable idea to install shock, 30mm kit and damper and set it up myself or is this insane? ill be paying $1000 bucks for the full service...I know that this is one of the best suspension shops in the east coast but since the bike will not be intended to race, just trackdays it make me think

Well the $3400 is as I mention for hardware (shock, 30mm kit, damper, springs & oil) that account for $2500 everything...there is around $400 for instalation...and around $500 for chasis setup...(work with me to fully adjust the suspension for me...)

If you think the 30m kit is so great wait till you try the Gas Cartridges for this thing!

No I sent the forks to Kyle Racing he put them in and installed the updated valving from Ohlins.

as far as setting it up I enjoy tuning suspension so I would say do it yourself, but this is all a comfort level if you don't feel comfortable turning knobs them I'm sure there is a tuner at the track that would help you

Suspension is the best $$ you will ever spend on your bike.

I had to pick my battles, I just spent a ton of $ on my race bike so convincing my wife I needed Gas kits would have been my death warrant

Good choice! But keep in mind the C and B SSTK classes are also know as the meatgrinder classes because theres a lot of new racers with the very same idea you have! It's definately a better idea than racing the 1K or at least for the beginning of your racing career

I got my kit installed, together with a TTX and a steering damper, at the Öhlins factory (more like assembly plant) this week.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it tricky but it takes quite a lot of disassembly, particularly in the rear where you need to remove the gas tank and tilt the rear subframe upwards in order to get the shock out, and you should be at least two persons to do it.

The forks however require a special tool but that can be bought according to Öhlins.

I consider myself to be just a notch above the average shade-tree mechanic and I wouldn't hesitate doing this myself but now I didn't need to so off course I didn't.

I went for 10,5 springs in front and a 95 spring in the back (judged by my weight and riding style). All other settings being exactly as recommended by the Öhlins gal (same as in the paper you get with the kit). I also got to have a chat with the Öhlins chief test driver and you'd be surprised at how much testing that goes into each kit in order to simply determine the baseline from where to start your own tweaking. Measuring/setting sag and ride height as per the Öhlins recommendations is pretty easy and it's something you really should do.

I got the FGK (non gas) kit as it is the most streetable and doesn't require the maintenance that the FGR or the complete fork does.

And yes, it works really, REALLY, good.
