AFAM Front - EBC Double H - Bridgestone BT-003RS
Following my bikes 1 year anniversary with gears that IMHO were way too tall, today I said "See-YA" to downshifting into 1st gear and brake fade, thank GOD!
I changed the front sprocket to a Stock AFAM 525/16 and this made a dramatic difference in the canyons. With the -OEM 17- I could hardly get out of 1st gear in the tight, twisty stuff. I did not have the chance to weigh the OEM against the AFAM, however, they are a significantly heavier.
I changed those sucky OEM brake pads front and rear to EBC Double H, and quite pleased to say "Seeeee YA" to the brake fade experienced under even moderate braking. (Flushed out the old brake fluid, too) I also changed the Racetec K3's after 4500 miles to Bridgestone BT-003RS for $279.00 they heated up faster, & delivered immediate confidence at extreme angles - never tried Metzler before, and never going back. Check out the multiple compounds and proven MotoGP performance below.

Those of you who stay on long, boring straight stretches of asphalt, who never thought of getting some support to set your SAG, compression, preload, rebound, etc., who may wear panties, just saying, should stick with the tall gears provided by BMW. However, the rest of you MEN; the S1000RR was a fire-breathing beast before, but it just turned evil, ferocious and delicious OMG.
My best mates new girlfirend asked how I like children, and I told her I usually like them medium rare...

^^^^ Will that help us get 4500 miles on K3's too? That can't be your first set
BTW, the next step is to bump up two teeth in the rear

How in the world did you get 4500 miles out of a set of tires?
My Sport Attack rear was shot after <1400 miles.

Well 4478 to be exact; for me, it depends on three things, how well your suspension is setup - and how quiet your riding style is on the bike - and track days. I have zero track days on the S1000 riding the canyons and spending most of my time on the side of tires with smooth transitions side to side. I still had some sidewall tread left, however the wear indicators in the middle were quite toasted. I had well over 4000 miles of success with the new Bridgestones BT's on my last BMW K Bike as well.

If you got 4.5k miles out of a rear K3 that suggests to me that there was no point in you dropping a tooth from the front sprocket as you dont use all the power anyway. I have no pretence at being above an average rider, no way do I use WOT much, my suspension has been set up and I got 3.1k miles out of my rear tyre.

Greetings Brit - don't be so quick to attack & get your panties all bunched up. Consider posting substantive information to help the user community in lieu of countless, purposeless, boring responses to others who have a pair between their legs to try new things. FYI, the sprocket change was about staying out of 1st gear & nothing regarding power. I can understand that your vagina sometimers causes you to say stupid things, however, please be considerate & selfless because none of this is about you, your tire acumen, suspension or pretence masquerading as one potentially well informed. They do sell tanpons in England, right?

Colo... did you wear your tires down to bottom of the grooves or just to the top of the wear bars? Also what pressure were you running the rear?

Greetings Neighbor - Excellent question, I ignored the wear bars and ran deep into the K3grooves, perhaps not to smart; however, I wanted the max. number of miles I could possibly get out of the Metzlers over the winter. Regarding pressures, I never changed the 42 which came from my dealer. If I stopped at the wear bars my suspicion is that the total miles would have been reduced by 700 to perhaps a 1000. It seemed criminal to remove tires with so much tread left on the sides...

Interesting... I've been running around 32psi in the rear (K3), changed the tire out just shy of the wear bar, and ended up just shy of 2500 miles. Sounds like the 10psi helped a bit.. and of course going past the wear bar. I've always been a fan of jeopardizing the life of the tire for better grip. It's interesting to see real numbers of what a difference in 10psi can make aside from going past the wear bars... my guess is you still got about 1000 miles extra out of them due to the increased pressure.
BTW, what kind of mileage have you been getting?

Thanks for throwing me the bone... Very interesting to learn you are at 10psi less - that's a dramatic difference. I just checked pressures (again) in my new Bridgestone BT-003's & confirmed 36/42. Why did you decide upon 32 in the rear, and what are you running up front? Should I be considering reducing the pressure for enhanced grip? Could you literally be paying a high price for scrubbing rubber at low psi? Regarding mileage, I have some receipts from Sept of last year - stopped counting - my best mileage appears to be 41mpg. The new AFAM 16 will reduce this & seriously, I am delighted not to downshift into 1st - was a major PITA in the canyons, just flipping screaming in 1st with too few opportunities to get into 2nd in the tight stuff. Engine braking is a reality in 2nd gear with the change. Interesting, too that I never had a great deal of confidence in the K3's, testament to this is I have three rides & about 300 miles on the new BT's - and already as far out on the BT's than over 4K on Metzlers. I had two previous BT sets on a VTR I raced in the local MRA & placed back on the street for several years until I bought the S. Owned a 96 K1100RS & 4 - 320/325IS series, too.
