Default Tire Valve Stem Question..

Does anyone know the size of the valve stem on the S1K? I have 90 degree stems on all my bikes. The vendors I've looked at usually just state "fits most Japanese bikes". They come in 8mm and 10mm as far as I can tell. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I don't have your answer, but I'll bet KurveyGirl.com will. They have worked with some of the BMW teams with brake pads, and I'd think they'll know which valve stems will fit the S1000RR. Drop them an email.

I know that BMW uses the larger valve stem than the Italian or Japanese bikes.

I will say that I did have one of those 90 degree things on my other BMW and it leaked in time. Started out slow and then it picked up steam to the point I could swivel the stem with the tire chuck on it (that's how I discovered the problem). Only way to tighten it is to dismantle the tire from the rim. I even used some RTV sealant on it as it was still a bit looser that I would have liked when I put it in.

I think what happens is that over time, you push against it with the air-chuck and then maybe swivel it a bit too. It's pretty thin aluminum too at the threaded part that is bound by the nut on the inside of the wheel. In time, mine loosened and then slow-leaked maybe a few pounds of air a week until it's really flat in a week or two. I thought I had a nail hole or stem valve leak, but never suspected the thing just loosening up - especially since I used sealant as well as I didn't want the thing to come apart inside the wheel nor leak either.

Went back to the rubber stems and got an angled air-chuck head put on the air hose at some hydraulic hose outfit for $7. No more leaks since.

I purchased mine from Cuvry Girl (ebay) as well, let her know what bike I have and she got it right (in fact, she got all 4 bikes right and they are not all the same).

Hope this helps,

Michael

Julie from Kurvy Girl replied to my email...said 11.3 mm valve. They have quite a selection on their website. I have 'em on all my bikes and never had a problem. Like Mack said, they can "rotate" if not properly torqued down to begin with.
