2012 tyres?
Now that the S1000RR has been tweaked for 2012, does anyone know what tyres it's going to have as standard?
Whilst on the subject of tyres... A lot you guys in the States rate the Dunlop Q2's. When I look on the Dunlop.eu website it shows that the tyres rated as more sporty, and which in motorcycle press get excellent reviews, is the Sportmax SportSmart. Above that they have the Sportmax GP Racer D211, which is a track focused tyre - great, but not much use on the cold, wet roads in the UK, or on anything but warm dry conditions. Do you have the SportSmart in the States? And, if so, how do you rate it?
Regards to all
Ash

From the pictures that I have seen of the 2012 model, it seems like the bike will continue to use the Metzlers.
The D211 is certainly a very good track day tire. I use Q2 for track and street and they work really well. Their grip on wet and cold roads isn't that great though, but that's how it is gonna be for all performance tires, unless you mount a set of good sport touring tires. I don't think SportSmart are sold in US.

I believe because dunlop has a manf plant in both the USA and UK, the tires and selections are totally different. The UK made Ntec race tire has always been and still is the best road racing tire available. The USA plant has finally come out with a tire/compound to compete with the UK tire for 2012. Both are Dunlops, just from different manf. plants. So I would assume the same is true for the street tires.
Q2's are USA made so not sure what would be comparable in the UK. I can tell you that the Q2 is the tire just below the USA made race tire. It isn't too far off the pace of the full on race tire at the track either.

not sure what this has to do with the price of tea in china, but whilst negotiating my contract for 2012 with BMW and Metzeler, I was informed by Metzeler that BMW would be handling my tires as well as they were working some deal out....maybe it affects racing in the US, maybe it's bigger than that.

Whilst at the uk bikeshow i noticed that the bikes on the stand had different makes of tyres, so just like previous models i think they will be delivered with what they have on the shelf at the factory, hopefully mine will come with the metzlers as i much prefer those to the con ti's my 2010 came with.

Thanks for that guys. It definitely seems like there's a difference between UK and USA Dunlops. Shashankmittel, the UK Q2's wouldn't be suited to the track at all! Here they are sports tourer tyre. The one below the super sticky GP Racer D211 track tyre, is the SportSmart... maybe these are the equivalent to the US Q2's, as the SportSmarts get excellent reviews. I'll post a pics of the GP Racer D211 and of the SportSmart and see if you guys recognise the tread patterns.

My 2010 came with Contis as well and I have had no problems with them. Everything I've read has also been positive. How are your Metzlers better as I have not been a fan of them on my old R100CS where I much prefer the Bridgestone BT-45s, but then that is a completely different ball game.

I think with all tyres it lots to do with the mind, don't get me wrong I never had any major moments with the conti's but something stopped me really going for it with them on, on the other hand i put the metzlers on (a tyre i have used before) and just go for it and feel so confident as my mind feels safe i suppose.

Sorry, not been able to post pics from phone. Maybe it's possible but I lost patience with it; I'll send them from the PC later.
Yes, mine came with Contis fitted. They are good, and have done well for fast road riding but I did a couple of track days on them here in the UK, Snetterton and Brands Hatch, but I can't get upto my normal race pace on them. I had a couple of little twitches and warnings from them, nothing major but I knew I was a their limit. I know with something more track focused I could have upped the pace to another level, without the slips n slides. I did a bit of club racing some years back and know exactly what Roonster means.

Me too with the club racing, having done a few track days on the metzlers I feel very confident with them and so I think metzlers for me.
