glad he is going to be OK, looked like target fixation and poor body position for the speed he was cornering, from the video, get him to some trackdays

+1

That wasn't going in too hot... It was a failure to turn the bike.

Default Crash Analyisis

Okay, so I've gone back and taken a good look at what transpired:

1. Rider is crossed up during turns, so instead of his body leaning the direction of the turn, rider leans his head in the opposite direction of he body which is a common mistake for riders who have no track training (everything should be going in the same direction body, head, etc.).

2. Rider rides duck footed (feet hanging pointing down towards the ground, instead of riding on the front of his feet.

3. Rider takes the turn from the right of center when he should be approaching that particular corner from the left of the center (left-turn start from the right, right-turn start from the left).

What I seeing happening is all of the above 3 conditions in addition to target fixation.

Rider sets-up wrong, and looks towards rock wall, he most likely starts to tense up as he sees the wall in his view, realizing that his line is now off and telling himself he may not be able to make the corner, his right foot then touches down (I think this is the coo de gra for this incident), and from there this rider is self doomed since he thinks his bike is fully leaned over, which in reality it was not.

Rider panics from the foot drag, straightens out the bike, continues to concentrate on rock wall and collides with wall. Knowing how to trail brake could of made a world of difference. In all fairness it takes a lifetime to be able to ride a motorcycle remotely well. I'm still working on getting there myself.

+1 this is the key, he started his turn too early.

Glad to see he will ride again another day.

Triple Threat is spot on for this scenario.

Guess I am a suckass rider too... been there and done that.

Target fixation is a VERY natural thing to do. Probably one of the biggest evils of motorcycle riding, trackday goers, and racing... and other extreme sports (where things happen very fast, and if you screw up it's gonna hurt). I had a head on wreck that totaled my last bike - was an eye opening experience to say the least. Target fixation sealed my doom and resulted in the head on. A buddy of mine just had a crash about 2-3 months ago that looked very similar to that video... target fixation sealed his doom too.

Glad your buddy was/is OK. Aside from being battered a bit, many times the pride is one of the biggest things hurt, I know mine was. My guess is he has and will learn a lot about target fixation. The track can help a LOT in learning about it as well as your reactions in tense situations.

Again, glad your buddy is OK, positive reinforcement is what he needs now. Although target fixation is the worse thing you can do in a situation like that, it is VERY natural and VERY easy to do. Glad hes alive for another ride!!
