Default Aussie coming to the Big Apple (NYC)

Well I am heading over to the USA on the 23 Jul and flying into San Fran for a few days. I am then heading down to Monterey On the 27 Jul and doing the Moto Gp (all tickets are booked- yip yah!!!!!). After the GP its back to San Fran and we fly to Dayton OH to catch up with some friends. We intend seeing Cleveland and Niagara Falls while there. I will drive to NYC after this.
My question is, can anyone provide me information on where will be a great place to stay and still be on the cheaper side of things? I have no idea on NYC as I have never been there. I figure I would want to be central to most of the tourist sites. Should I get rid of the car as soon as I get to NYC as I have heard hardly anyone drives cars in the city...

Any info is appreciated.

But what I do know is that cheap and New York can't be said in the same sentence.

I can't help you on where to stay in NY as I've never been there, but I will say once you figure out what part you want to stay in you could try price line.com. And bid on a room. I have used it a handful of times for rooms in Milwaukee, and Chicago. I always got a really great room at a damn good price. Last time I was in Chicago I got a room at the hyatt regency (4star hotel) for $100.00 a night

Your best bet is to find a place in Queens. I've seen $90 a night and a short ride under the East River on the subway to the Manhattan. Nothing like taking a NYC subway ride!! And you'll be close to Brooklyn if you like to drive to Coney Island and check out the rest of Brooklyn and/or Queens. Also, you can take a nice drive out on Long Island and check out the Beaches....etc, really nice roads and views.
Lots of people drive in Manhattan but you're going to pay plenty for parking.
Google search hotels in Queens. Try to find one in Long Island City, Queens or Astoria, Queens.

This just one of the many:
