Old school racing this year
Well, I am going racing this year. There is a state round for old bikes between 1990–1995/96 model release, called pre modern. I am also going to run my s1000rr in another road race class but that doesn’t start until March so will get to that later.
I wanted to find a bike already prepped and came across the 7X7R below which placed 2nd in the championship last year. It was a bit rough cosmetically but with some love it came up OK. I took it for a quick run around the block. Forgot how raw these old bikes feel and how heavy!
Anyway I ran a 7X7R in a couple of club events in 1998 before the bike was crashed and written off (not by me). I really wanted a SRAD 750 Suzuki, as I had lusted over the GSXR750T (srad) many years ago after doing some laps on a mate’s. But as circumstances at the time dictated, I would have to give up bikes altogether for more than 10 years. I never got the Suzuki.
Talking with another mate of mine interested in doing the same class this year he agreed to take the ZX7R of me and I decided I would build the Suzuki.
I found a road bike with only 22,000klms on it in mint condition. It is so good I considered keeping instead of racing it! Took it out for the day.
I was worried that my memories of the bike might be a bit nostalgic. Like how you remember some hot girl from school only to see here at a school reunion years later and wonder what you were thinking! But my fears were not realised.
What a blast, still fast, feels even lighter than the S1000RR and so much fun. I managed to warp the discs and fry the clutch within an hour but it still didn’t wipe the smile from my face.
Below are pics of both bikes. I will update the build if anyone is interested.
Note: If anyone has any race parts hiding in their shed for the SRAD please let me know. Also to any vendors on this site still able to get parts – rearsets, flatslides, suspension, full exhaust, clutch, 520 kit etc
