Default Fairing Cracked, help!

Just picked up my 2011 RR 2 weeks ago and couldn't be happier with it. I took the bike in for It's first service and all was well. Once I got it home I noticed that the lower section of fairing on the right side (throttle side) had a crack, split right through. It's at the point which sits infront of the black water pump housing, well I think it is the water pump.

I know it was fine the day before and the dealer insists it wasn't them as they don't remove the fairing and it wasn't test ridden due to bad weather. There are no marks or chips on it so don't think anything has hit it.

My thought is that it has had a hair line crack from delivery which hasn't been seen which has gradually got worse from the engine vibration eventually splitting. Is my opinion possible? The dealer aren't interested and have told me to look on eBay for a replacement panel even though they admit it doesn't look like anything has struck it. I feel it should be done on warranty as the bike is only 2 weeks old! Any thoughts or advice would be grately appreciated.

Does anyone else get bad vibration through the right foot peg? Again this is adding to my reason for it cracking.

Cheers

No chips or marks? I agree, it sounds like a warranty issue.

Do you have something like a "lemon law" in Great Britain/Scotland?
Since the bike is only "2 weeks old" and doesn't have a lot of miles/kilometers on it I'm sure something can be done to get it repaired/plastics changed under the warranty... In anyway it is sad to hear that it happened and dealer is not willing to assist you... Good luck...

Default lemon law

Think we must, dealer are totally uninterested, they never even asked to see it just said there was nothing they could do. I had to take the bike up and actually say I wanted someone to look at it, then they said it hadn't been hit by anything. The ebay comment was a brilliant solution for a brand new bike I thought. Don't know if BMW UK would like to hear about their dealers suggestions. I wasn't impressed but the fight goes on.

Keep us posted. What if you will try to send an email to BMW UK? they should have facebook page or something public related... I think... just my thoughts. Another idea, how hard it will be to have BMW representative registered on the forum, just like vendors?

I have the same problem. Thought I bumped it in the garage. Mine cracked through and disintegrated around the screw that holds the back tab in place. It is a really thin piece of plastic.

As long as you haven't installed anything that needed removing of the fairing than I would think BMW should warranty as it was probably their fault when servicing the bike. If you have installed something that required it to come off the your SOL IMO

I'm with GTR on the who pays game...

But if you end up getting stuck with it, I'd get some fiberglass laid in (sooner than later) or at least the resin on the back side so that the crack can grow no more and it'll end up being stronger than new. Then you'd just need to decide weather or not to deal with the small crack left behind. A little bondo and sanding would do it, but then you'd have to repaint that area and clear again. If the crack doesn't show too bad, you might just stop with laying a small piece of fiberglass on the back side.

Well I have sent pictures and taken the bike over to the dealer. Finally they have decided to replace the panel as there is no sign of it being hit to cause the crack so all is well that ends well. Nice!
