Just got mine in the mail this past Monday and I was quite impressed with how little you know it's there once you put it on and slip your helmet on. I haven't been to the track yet with it, but I was messing around with simulating looking though turns, tucking, and taking a shoulder peak behind me.

I was interested in taking a look at this product because of the fear of fatal neck injuries. Apparently, the guy in this crash:

Session 1 I Group NESBA 27 Aug 11 Barber MSP - YouTube

credits the leatt with saving his hide.

However, I have heard bad stories about the leatt sometimes doing more bad than good in "minor" crashes. For example, a crash where you land on your shoulders ends up breaking your collarbone because of the leatt....

I think I may purchase this down the line but I may wait and see as technology gets better.

The SPIDI airbag concept is good, but the wire attachment to the bike sounds bothersome during track days, and replacing the CO2 cartridge isn't very convenient.

On the top end of the spectrum, the Dainese D-Air Race looks fantastic, claims to reduce forces by 85%, and protects the neck in an non-invasive manner. However, suit costs about $3700 and is for track use only (though a street version is coming out...).

Anyway, I would be glad to hear other people's opinions, as neck protection is something that worries me, as I feel like I have absolutely none

The problem with a broken collar bone is that many riders will purchase a brace that is too large and instead of the brace resting on the chest and back it rests on their shoulders.

I am concerned that the airbag will not work as well as the Leatt STX in the event of a lawn dart type of impact where compression forces are likely to result in a C-spine injury. Journal articles indicate that instances where the neck is not able to move out of the way result in the C-spine absorbing all of the impact force which, in turn, is likely to lead to a fractured vertebra(e) and the associated neural complications.

The neck can be bent pretty in any direction with the sides, back or front of the head contacting some part of the torso. Many of these instances will result in stretched/torn ligaments, but may also be less likely to induce a fracture - whiplash from a rear end collision is an example of this.

I see the airbag vest as an excellent solution for whiplash and ligament damage mitigation, but not a good one for avoiding compression injuries since it seems that it would disallow the head to move out of the way.

The Leatt (and Alpinestars neck brace) are designed to permit the head to move out of the way and then limit range of travel while at the same time directing the energy that the spine would otherwise be obliged to take up on its own to larger parts of the body. In this way, it makes the impact more survivable for the wearer.
