is it just my balls aint big enough
Having had my s1000 for nearly 12 months now , i went to watch a pal at donington park trackday ,
Well i ended up paying on the day and doing the morning sessions .
The question is , why didnt i ever use my traction control ?
I am average rider , but i just cant seem to get my head round opening the throttle early enough while the bike is on its side ( i feed the throttle in gradually as the bike comes up right )
With the traction control on my bike , should i be able to just crack the throttle open once i'm starting to get the bike up right ?

Sadly....YES...
Actually, with TC, theoretically you should be able to whack the throttle at apex and let the electronics sort out the rest. My bike doesn't have the TC so I don't know how well it works, how seamless it is, etc. I have heard though that is a bit abrupt and noticeable where on the new zx10r, you don't even know it's working...

What Nikk said...
I wouldn't recommend "whacking" the throttle open... smooth and deliberate will net your more consistency.
Next time you're at the track, pay attention to one of the faster turns on the track and at what point you get back on the throttle... next time around get on it a little sooner - you'll be surprised how much sooner you can get on the throttle. Assuming your smooth, eventually you may feel the rear step out slightly on you.... just maintain and the electronics will snap it right back in place for you. You gotta trust it though.

EEERRRMMM...i used mine on the road the other sunday i came in to kates cottage on the mountain course a little too fast....handfull of front back starts to lift and feels like its go,z two foot to the left ( but it didnt ) id asume the traction and abs workt a treat...if ya got dam well use it.. i say

think thats my problem , i've adjusted my brain to tell me that i shouldnt open it up early ( i think i am a fairly smooth ,if not fast rider ( front- ish of inters is where i usually am ) so should get the benifit of traction control once i've felt it work and know i can trust it )

RACE mate .
Was prob only riding at 95% as i usually only track what i can afford to chuck down the road ,
will be back at donington in 3 weeks , but will be on my old gixer 750

Make sure when you exit that next corner wind that throttle wide open!! Oh and make sure it's in slick mode lol Oh and i take no responsibly if you end up in the gravel trap lol!!

LOL , i know some of the quick lads find all the gismo's slow em down and they turn em off , but this Yorkshire man needs all thae help he can get

It's counter-intuitive to think you should be on the throttle while leaned over. This is of course at the Apex or shortly after. I've got a coach friend that's been helping me pretty much every time out on the track. He had me work on one turn one day... and one turn only. Told me to forget the rest of the track. He had me focus on this one turn which was a higher speed turn but one you'd still have your knee down. He had me push my turn-in point back (later) a little and tip it in fast and then try and get on the throttle sooner and back out. Prior to that, I was on maintenance throttle at the apex and then after the bike started to stand up, I would get on the throttle deliberately but smoothly. After focusing on just that one turn, after just a handful of laps, I was able to get back on the throttle right at the apex if not a couple/few feet before. This lead to a faster front straight and then lead to me getting on the throttle sooner on every turn.
Although you may not race (I'm assuming), the one thing I do notice racing is that you ALWAYS are trying to get back on the throttle. I'm constantly saying to myself - get on the throttle, get on the throttle. During track days, quite honestly, we all tend to get a little lazy.
So next time, focus on one turn, talk to yourself in your helmet - "get on the throttle"... keep on working on that one turn, don't worry about the rest. Pick one that you're going to have to corner low but is still a fast-ish turn... probably won't be the fastest turn on the track (like your big fast sweeper)... one that is a little sharper than that. One where you can gain consistency in your choice of brake pt., turn-in pt., and apex.
Good luck... it'll come quicker than you think! Once you get faster on that one turn, you'll be quite surprised how much time you pick up on the entire track because it'll bleed over into all the other turns too.
