Throttle control or suspension?
Which is more important, good throttle control or a properly set up bike and why?

Properly for what? Must surely depend how you ride? Myself, ive done 3000miles getting used to the engine characteristics, having raised my comfort level by a good margin i find it handles so wrong in certain areas, having suspension set up next week. No excuses after that

My limited experience at the Track told me that w/out the suspension properly set up... that I better have REALLY (even better) good throttle control. Once I got the suspension tuned in, I worried less about throttle input... although still a good amount of controlled throttling.

hey misti this one is simple Throttle Control as well as Brake Control, Shifting, etc etc, reason being is with out it you can't set the bike up properly!!! You have to have the basic rider skills to start with before you can set up a bike. Most people think that if the get the bike set-up with all the high dollar fancy parts the bike is going to magicly go faster, most people will actually go slower on a correctly set up bike for the wrong skill level because they don't have the skill required to work the bike. Ever hear the statement the faster you go the better the bike will feel? This is why is so important to be honest with your self and your tuner when setting up a bike, most good tuners will want to know the skill level and this is why.

I agree with this for sure. You have to have a good grasp of basic skills like throttle control before you will be able to understand bike set up and suspension. Also, it does you no good if you have the best set up bike in the world but you have crappy throttle control
So how does throttle control influence the suspension on the bike. Keith Code calls throttle control "suspension on the fly," meaning that good throttle control helps to put the bike in the correct suspension range and make the bike more stable but HOW exactly does this work?

You can buy a good setup, but you can't buy riding skill. Work on your riding so you can take advantage of your setup. Once your riding style begins to emerge, you can tailor your setup to match.

A race can be won or lost on either aspect of this. my last race I was going as hard as I could as fast as I could on Saturday and eked out a 5th place! I was worried as hell all afternoon after the race about my poor finish we lowered the rear of the bike 3mm because I could not get the rear to hook up and then on Sunday I won, I ran 2tenths off the track record! and IMO you are just as lost without throttle control as you are with a poor setup
but f I had to pick I was say +1 to what TCCHIN said!

congrats on the win!!, one thing to consider though. No matter how good your set up was with poor throttle control (skills) you would not have won.
Another way to look at is a good rider can ride around a poor setup and do ok, an unskilled rider will be slow no matter how good the set up is.

+1 on this and great explanation. I fully agree that without good throttle control you would not have won, even a very well set up bike.
I guess the other way to ask this question could be, "WHEN should riders begin to mess around with their suspension settings?"

IMO sag should be set and knobs base lined ASAP, But perfect suspension set up is a relative term, Even if it's the same rider on the same bike on the same track! the reason is as you get faster, your suspension needs to work faster, and their for you need to adjust, get even faster... adjust again and on, and on, and on...
