Default XT GPS Pro Lap Timer

Anyone using the XT GPS Pro lap timer? How is it working out? Does it help improve your speed? Installation issues/ease?

I have been using one on my regular track bike (not a S1000RR). It is very useful when trying to improve lapt times at a particular track. I like the details it can provide about split times, lateral/forward/aft G's during manuvering on each section of track/turns, and being able to review that detail on a map of the track.

If your goal, however, is to improve your riding; spend the money on quality instruction from one of the top schools. You will get far more benefit to you.

Also, to get the most from it; you need to tap into the RPM, throttle position, front brake (brake light switch or add a pressure switch), and gear indicator data feeds. Not something I would suggest doing without the benefit of a very well qualified tech with plenty of S1000RR experience to install. The S1000RR's electrical system is a bit more complex than your average scooter.

I have one on my 748 and the installation wasn't too bad. I currently have it wired for power, RPM (inductively), water temp, and programmed it to know what gear I'm in by comparing RPM and speed off of the GPS. Handy tool, though half of why I put it on the 748 was for gauge redundancy. Programming your own custom screens with logos and names is very trick. I'd imagine the install on an S1000 might be a little more involved. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me.

Not familiar with this unit. This thread discusses the wiring and other considerations.

You can tap into the CAN signals from the rear alarm connector. Then you can get the throttle position from the connector on the left side mentioned in the referenced thread. You can't use the CAN signal for throttle position as it only shows the actual opening of the throttle plate, not what you are commanding at the throttle grip.

Braking could get interesting. I think the rear brake light is connected to the CAN. Haven't figured out which signal is for the brake light...yet.

We have a couple of these in the shop. Very intense units. Logs a lot of data. I would only recommend it to a serious track day junkie.

I used it in my track car at several events and the datalogging capacity combined with their great desktop analysis software was extremely helpful. I was able to track down places where I wasn't carrying as much speed as better drivers, see if I lost time by downshifting instead of staying in a particular gear, etc...
