Default Throttle while trail braking in a turn

Tommy Hill On-Board GSX-R1000 - Snetterton - YouTube

I was watching this video of Tommy Hill, if you don't know him he's a fairly famous BSB rider, british superbike.

From the sound of the engine and the clear picture of his right hand, thumb, and throttle that there are quite a few turns where he is still on the gas and breaking at the same time.

Is this normal? Should I try this technique on our bikes? Am I going to wear out my front breaks and have to change them after every TD/race?

What are you guy's thoughts on accel and braking at the same time to tighten a turn...

Hi MDsk1...............Fairly famous..........He was last years BSB champion!!

I dont believe he's braking and accelerating at the same time, it just sounds that way due to his down shifts. IMO

hm, I guess he's on a whole nother level then. lol. Very seamless with his throttle control. I like how he doesnt really bend his wrist, but moves the throttle back and holds it with his fingers/thumb.

ive never used it but you can tell what the effects are when you do a burn out...the back end lifts up and plants that front tire...from my understanding thats exactly what goes on when using that technique or so ive read in some racing technique book lol

Nice video. I find it interesting that the BSB Champion seems to have no problem with stock levers.

IMO, I think what's being perceived as throttle is actually slowly releasing the clutch. As the revs come up it sounds like throttle, but it isn't.

You definitely don't want your rear wheel pushing while your front is trying to slow you down.

yeah this is being over thought way too much

brakes are for slowing, throttle is for accelerating, working both at the same time does what? it fights its-self and that will cost you lap time

the only time you would ever what to add throttle under braking is to match engine speed say if you DID NOT have a slipper clutch and you went in a gear too low and were getting chatter off the rear.

or if you'er "blipping" to down shift (matching engine speed with the gear box)

funny you mentioned it; braking was the topic i spoke about during one of my discussion in a NYE party count down with an Ex-racer

the art is not how much you late brake, its when and how you let go the lever.

it is an interesting subject, especially after seeing the video, it has validated what my friend said. I will keep this skill set under study with my next year on track and see how it turns out.

thanks for sharing MDsk1!!
