I recently had the below experience as detailed in my letter to BMW and wish to share. I've seen similar posts and would love to know the outcome or how the warranty is being handled. Thank you!,,
Having taken delivery of the S1000RR I rode it for the first time over the weekend of the 8/9 April both to Rustenberg and Cullinan, putting on some 500plus km all without exceeding the 7000rpm running in limitation.
I did not ride the bike again until the weekend of 22/23 April, again being careful to not exceed the 9000rpm running in requirement. The bike was then brought to yourselves for the 1000km service on the 25/04. It was ridden twice more over the weekends between the service and the 16th of June, the exact dates of which I'm not 100% certain of.
I took the bike out on Friday 16 June for a ride. After approximately 20 minutes of riding I noticed that the bike seemed to be 'lagging' at around 8000rpm, almost as if waiting for what felt like a power band to kick in, similar to what you'd experience on a 2 stroke motorcross motorcycle. The motorcycle battled to perform between 8000 and 12000 rpm in 5th gear and a minute later the engine made an awful grating sound and lost power completely.
I called my girlfriend to collect me and the motorcycle, which was started only when I loaded it onto the trailer and returned it to your premises on Saturday 17th June.
The bike has to date done less than 1500km, has been ridden moderately at best with all precautions taken to run it in correctly and still has the rubber nipples on the tyres.
My expectations were that this was a performance machine designed specifically for high performance riding. I would expect that the average rider would use about 50% of this bikes capabilities, the experienced rider around 65-70%. I had booked and paid to attend your track-day at Zwartkops on the 16th July, expecting that this bike was designed for that exact reason. I now have my reservations and saw another failure from BMW out of first place in the World Superbikes on Sunday.
I rode a Yamaha R1 2004 model from 2008-2012 without a single engine issue and it was ridden considerably harder.
I have done some research into similar engine failures on the BMWS1000RR which I will attach at the end of this mail.
Whilst I am very grateful to all 3 of you for your excellent service and response with regard to this issue, I would like to put on record that I am taking this incident as a 1 off. Call it a Monday motorcycle that slipped through production with some kind of manufacturing defect/ tension issue. I'm sure in time the issue will be explained. I obviously expect that the bike be replaced with the S1000RR performance machine I purchased and then performs as such. As the motorcycle has been financed I am unsure of the process that I need to follow in order to proceed. Please would you be so kind as to advise me?
I understand you will need to relay this case to BMW SA and request that you please do so as a matter of urgency - for the very limited time I rode the bike I did enjoy it and would very much wish to be back on a working RR.
