Soon-to-be owner from Edmonton AB
Hiya. Looking to be a new s1000rr owner next year as soon as the snow melts. Signing up here now in hopes of getting some info on the 2012 s1000rr when it becomes available.
Long time Yamaha r6 owner (I have had 3 of them throughout the years) and track junkie. Been considering going to a literbike for years now but they aren't as much fun on the tight technical track I go to and I never really felt I needed the extra power. The 1k's might have always smoked me on the straights but I can hang with the best of them on the corners!
Been contemplating the BMW since its release, was just having trouble justifying the purchase of another bike as I do not want to sell any of the toys I already have to make room for the BMW.
Anyway, here is a pic of my current r6. It made ride of the month in May of this year on r6forum.com!

Well, I will try to NOT be biased but I cant promise anything. I love this bike more than I like my gf lol! I promise you, purchasing this bike will be the best decision you've ever made.
There was a couple of us on here early this morning having a discussion as to when the 2012's will be on the showroom floor. The 2012's mechanically, will be the same as the 2011's. The differences on the 2012's will be minor cosmetics. So this is my opinion on the S1K.
I've had a zx-6, 3 CBR1000's and an R1. As everyone will admit, all our bikes have their flaws. The best bike (IMO of course) that I owned prior to the S1K was the CBR. The yamaha's just seemed tinny to me and didn't have the grunt that the CBR had to get up to speed. The S1K makes all of my other bikes just seem inferior. The S1K is simply on another level. Prior to the BMW, 150hp was whopping for me. Now that I've ridden the BMW for awhile, I can't imagine having any less power. All through the power band the BMW just wants to pull. I tell this to every person who asks me about the bike, but it seems impossible to put this bike down. The best way to describe this bike is this. You have to think about riding on other bikes. The BMW does the thinking for you. You will enjoy every single second on this puppy. I've never enjoyed riding as much as I have on the S1K.

So I did pretty much your exact conversion.
Had a 2006 R6 that I rode for 3 years...
Bought the 2010 S1000RR when it first came out and had about a month and a half of overlap where I owned both bikes..
The R6 is garbage compared to the S1000RR. Getting back on the R6 after just 2 weeks of riding the S1000rr made me unhappy. Everything felt 'sloppier' and cheaper... Suspension, brakes, throttle, you name it.. Even the signal indicator switch...
Of course, performance wise, the r6 just didn't feel like the same bike....
Totally worth the upgrade..

I started with a Honda 900 Hornet, Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe, R6, R1, 2009 V-Max, B-King and now the S1000RR with all the bits. Certainly the best bike I have owned.

Keep your R6 for the track have the S1 for the street. Make your R6 a full time track bike. Our local track sounds like yours, tight and technical. The 600's do just fine out there w/the biggest of the boys Track record is held by a 600 in fact.
You'll love the S1 for sure!
Welcome aboard too!!

I actually anticipate a loss of performance in all areas other than the powerplant in stepping into the s1000rr. All my bikes have been highly modified... no stock brakes, suspension or throttle issues here. I will be going from a bike riding on top shelf aftermarket components to one that is comprised of (reportedly) better than average stock stuff.
For example one article in here recently caught my eye where there was some discussion about the possibility of an upgrade to the BMWs stock quickshifer into one that cuts the ignition. My HM+ QS already does that, so I guess that means that the clutch based model on the BMW must be something lesser?
I do plan to modify the BMW as well as I love working on and customizing bikes so we will see where things go once I get the horse in my stable so to speak.

Exactly my plan... sort of.
My track record is also held by a 600. Guy that has the record is barely 18 too. I have been riding as long as he has been alive and he smokes me!
The r6 will be my full time track weapon and the BMW will never see the track. But as of now the plan is to keep the 6 registered and insured for the street so my wife can ride it. She currently rides a Ninja which is on its way out to make way for the BMW.
Thanks for the welcome!

Wow, your R6 is beautiful! The S1000RR is gonna blow your mind though! The handling is in a class that you can usually only find in the aftermarket world. I guess it's kinda quick too...
