New member, need help
Hello all,
Never been one for forums but i need help with my bike. I'm currently riding up in NY but have been riding for roughly 7 years in all areas of the country. (traveling with work). Started with a YZF 600, then went to a GSXR 600, GSXR 750 and now an 11' S1000rr.
Ok, now the issue I need help with.
-Anytime I'm taking a turn over 20mph with some decent lean in the turn the rear end feels off as if the whole thing is about to slide out from under me. I've gone into the ONE dealer(where i bought the bike) within riding distance and they cant find anything wrong. Problem is the mechanic isn't really an enthusiast, he took it out came back and tells me "I had it over 100mph and didnt feel anything wrong". Completely ignoring the fact that i said it felt squirrelly in the turns.
I've reset all the suspension settings to the stock factory ones, cleaned off my tires, checked pressure and it still happens. I know what your probably thinking, its my riding, im not keeping even throttle and im upsetting the balance of the bike or im front braking but im not. I've had friends ride it and they feel the same thing. Its ruining my confidence and making riding loose its enjoyability. If anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Is the profile of the tire still good (not flattened down the middle from highway riding)?
What tire is it? Stock?
How far over are you when it starts to feel loose?
Is this all the time or just a certain road?
Which mode are you using (rain, street, race, slick)?
Would you consider changing the tire? My wife had a tire on her track bike that was out of round on the sides but fine down the middle. So at max lean it would chatter.
I'm asking a lot of basic questions to try to find something to troubleshoot. But if it was me, I'd start with a new tire or both if cost isn't too big an issue. Any quality brand and model should do.

More info...how many miles? Any non-standard equipment? Accident history? Tire condition? Fork leaks? Have you had the wheel bearings checked? Have you had suspension work done?

Have you sprung the bike for your weight? Assuming you aren't close to the target weight for the S1000? More specifically, any adjustments made to the rear shock? Have you made any changes and this started happening? Or is it something that just came up.. Need more info!
cheers,
-h

-Tires are stock, roughly 5k miles on them. No profile issues.
-Bike has no modifications to it.
-Suspension is back to factory settings.
-I ride in sport mode, power freeze lean angle is 45 degrees i believe
-Happens on any road, not a specific turn
-No accidents, no fork leaks
-Mechanic went over the bike, said everything's good. But to be honest i value his opinion as much as H-2 Charlie...forum troll.
-I can change tires if need be but would rather make sure its nothing else before i spend the cash.
-Just to be clear its not me "loosing" it in the turns, everyone is having the same experience when riding it.

People are probably having a hard time reading the 20mph part with decent lean angles... those two just don't go together too well unless you are on the track w/a superdooper whopper of a hair pin
Anyway, if your tires are good, your pressures are good, your suspension is set to stock, and you're not a lardass, I would then check your chain tension, your axle alignment, and rear axle bolt torque.
Also, what mode are you in? If you're not in Sport mode, I'd suggest you put it in Sport mode and try the same turns.
And finally, 5K seems a little high on stock tires. Only a few have done that many and even fewer over that, most only get about 2K to 2.5K miles on them (Metzlers anyway). Are the tires blueing and/or almost out of tread?

Without riding it myself, I'm led back to the tire as a potential cause.
Other stuff to think about...
Is the steering damper binding? Are the steering head bearings working ok?
Because you mention such a low speed... at low speeds you have to turn the bars in to keep the bike balanced and the amount of steering movement is greater than at higher speeds. So if for some reason the steering was binding it might cause a tip-over. Counterpoint is that you'd probably be saying it was going to just tip over rather than lose the rear.
Sorry bud, but I'm back to replacing the tire(s) as the first variable to remove from this equation.

If I'm reading the OP correctly, he said any time OVER 20mph.
He is in Sport mode.
