Default Newbie to BMW and considering a S1000RR new or used

Sorry, I missed this step and just started posting.....

Long time bike guy then moved to cars when I found leathers basically keep the pieces together and the mess to a minimum

I am doing more street riding these days and thinking about dumping the old standby GSXR100 and getting an SRR. I am a bit torn between used (there seem to be a lot coming on the market and some with full exhausts which interest me for the weight savings) and new. Things like cam hardness and crankshaft weight have been changed and usually companies like BMW do these things for good reasons. I am also a bit concerned about warranty and aftermarket exhausts (with fuel manipulators). I've done some work in the BMW car tuning arena and know BMW is spring loaded to void power train warranties on cars if you even think about changing something.

I know literally nothing about the SRR apart from the fact that it seems to be the only significant advancement in bikes since my 05 GSXR. Sure there have been some incremental changes but the BMW is the only thing that has motivated me to look at a newer bike.

As for the forum, the replies I have gotten have been very helpful and flaming is low. Thanks to the moderators for running a good clean place to share ideas.

Like w/most dealers from different manufacturers, there are mod-friendlier dealers than some others. I've exchanged e-mails w/my dealer discussing the PCV and exhaust and if it would be an issue, and they were very supportive. Now at some point, they can also get stuck between a rock and a hard place with BMW Corporate... if that happens, I would likely just remove the PCV prior to them doing the work, if my Dealer (and/or I) were concerned about Corporate getting in the middle of it.

Welcome aboard btw!

As far as a street bike, you can't go wrong with this BMW S1000RR. It really is a quantum leap from your GSXR 1000. I am a LONG time Sportbike rider and have ridden almost every sportbike on the market. I had a Kawasaki ZX-10R as my last literbike... before that, was a Ducati 998R, before that a GSXR 1000 etc, etc.

I ride my Bike to work every day and take it out for Weekend blasts around the hills here, as well as the occasional track day. It's comfortable, handles amazingly well for all but the most dedicated track junkie, reliable (I have 5, 200+ miles on mine as of today). The quickshifter is brilliant, the various modes of traction control have proven to be useful (I thought they would have no purpose for me, but commuting in the pouring rain for the last few months had made me a believer in leaving the Bike in sport mode for my wet commutes and race mode on dry days).

Quite frankly, I had no idea how good this Bike was going to be. Yes, I knew it was fast, but that's just the tip of the iceberg with this Bike. It's so good a everything, that it literally is the perfect Bike as far as I am concerned. I have done 810 miles in a day on it (San Francisco to Phoenix) in comfort (compared to my ZX-10R or my Triumph Daytona 675), I can go out and rip up the backroads of Napa and leave my buddies for dead, yet I can potter along in commute traffic, lane-splitting at 10 mph, knowing that the ABS and traction control are there to help me in an emergency if I hit a slick manhole cover, or train track.

Every day, I ride from my house in the boonies, then get to the onramp to the 101 Freeway... I hit WFO in 2nd gear and pin it through 6th as I slash though the traffic toward the Diamond/Commute lane and scream like a little girl that just got a pony for her Birthday present.. the sheer joy and adrenaline rush this Bike gives me , means that I start every day with a smile on my face and I'm sure as hell awake when I get to work..

Whether you buy new or used it is a great bike. Enjoy. Some great deals in the bikes for sale forum - might check there to see if something suits you.
