Default Hawaii Rider

Hey everyone. I ordered the 2012 BMW S1000RR about 2 weeks ago. The dealer said it wouldn't get to the island until Feb or Mar. So now I'm like a kid waiting for Chrismas. I currently ride a Suzuki SV650S, so this is a huge upgrade for me. I've only been riding for 7 months so I hope I don't kill myself. Can't wait to ride this beast!

I hope the same thing. 7 months is no where near enough time to move up to a today's liter bike, I don't care what anyone says or states they have done.

Hopefully you've had a chance to read this article: 1st Bike, Good Bike, Bad Bike,

Best of luck,

Triple

7 months is awfully early to be moving up to a bike like the S1RR but what done is done, ride your SV as much as possible between now and the S1Ks arrival and when it does get there, respect what it is and the fact that it can put you into a life threatening situation faster than almost anything else on the road.

Just don't go too crazy on it right away. Took me month to get comfortable on my s1r. Now taking three months off do to winter sucks.

Karl said it well right there!!

The great thing is the ABS and DTC will aid in your potential mistakes. My recommendation is to keep the SV650 and do some track days between now and the time the new one arrives. Hook up with some of the control riders at the track and have them work with you on lines, body position, etc. I will tell you with 100% confidence... you will learn more in 2-3 trackdays than you will on the street in 5yrs +... maybe even more.

Even if you respect the bike, unless you have some experience and dealings with near misses (hopefully not full-on detrimental "misses") the risk of bodily harm is pretty high. There's some statistics out there, but we won't go into those, let's just say the odds are not with you or any of us for that matter. The advantage the track provides you is that you will experience some of those near misses and are able to focus on you, the bike, and the asphalt and learn how to deal with them... as opposed to going out on the street and dealing with you, the bike, the asphalt, the guard rail, the oncoming car, the pedestrian, the squirrel, etc.

Have fun w/the bike but take your SV650 (great track'r btw) to the track in the mean time... you'll learn so much - believe me!!!

Oh yeah..... Welcome aboard too!

One thing I would probably recommand is riding the S1000RR in rain mode for a while. That'll taper your horsepower down and kick your traction control up a notch. This will help the transition from the SV. As others have recommanded keeping the SV might not be a bad idea!!

Good Luck...

Worth noting, the 2012 Rain mode is not like 2010/11 R mode. I think they added 15 or so more hp to that mode.

Becareful.

Thanks for the great advice. I've put 6000 on the SV so far. Thats the great thing about living here. I've got to admit that I'm a little intimidated by this bike, and hopefully it will stay that way for awhile. I've taken the basic and sportbike rider course and I signed up for a track day in January. I'll keep her in Rain for awhile and get adjusted. Again thanks for all the great advice everyone.
