Default 18000mi service...whats involved?

I have my 18k mi service coming up next month (you can probably imagine how much I love riding this bike ), so I have a few questions...hopefully you guys can guide me...

1. I heard that the 18k service is a major one and requires valve adjustment too. What is the approximate cost for this service?
2. I usually change the oil and oil filter myself. Do I need to get the service done by the dealer (without having them change the oil and oil filter) and later change the oil+oil filter myself? ...or shall I change the oil+oil filter and then take the bike to the dealer for valve adjustment?
3. What else is done as part of 18k service?

From what I can see in my service manual the additional items done at 30,000 km(18,641 mi) over and above the 10,000 km(6,214 mi) items are these:

Check valve clearance. Check valve timing. Replace spark plugs. Change fork fluid.

I plan on buying the two tools need for the valve checks and doing it over the winter. I expect I may be a little over the recommended mileage by the time I put the bike away.

I'd guess $500 to $800 depending on your dealer. Prices are all over the board on service from various dealers. If it checks okay on clearances, then it'll be the cheaper. If they pull the cam for some shim, it'll be more. However, if they pull the valve cover, they'll end up getting gunk in the oil so you may as well let them do it too - or they'll do it anyway. Just save your oil and filter for the next time you do it yourself. They might change out the coolant too. Probably do a computer check to see if any new updates are available for download. They'll probably do an ABS brake flush that you might circumvent easier.

Not true Mack. Even if a few pieces of dirt got in there the old filter and oil would carry it out and filter it just as easily as a new one. Being that it is a street bike there probably won't be any getting in there.

That is a kick-butt amount of riding in a year, fella, especially on a "no compromises" sport bike. Ride on, and good luck with the 18,000 service. Just had the 6000 mile service done and it was $450.

$450 sounds a lot...I have never paid more than $230 for any service until now...and that included oil and filter change.

I assume you're talking about the manual cam chain tensioner and the valve alignment jig. I'd be interested how much BMW wants for these and whether it is common that anything would be out of adjustment at 18K miles. This is the first bike I've seen that recommends a valve timing check.

I assume if the valve timing is off, you just replace the timing chain. I wonder if it might just be easier to replace the chain and tensioner at 18K miles and be done with it rather than screw around buying special tools.
