Default Oil filter wrench size.

A "B" size cap wrench fits correctly.

Now, anyone know how to get in there to get it off?

Last I have checked the filter for the S1000RR is the 541 filter. The BMW factory tool fits in there well and your regular flexhead ratchet can remove it just fine.

1) No, per the microfiche the filter for the S1000RR is part number 11427721779.

2) What "BMW factory tool"?

3) I suspect I can remove the filter, but oil will be dribbled everywhere. Interested to see who has done the change and how many plastics they've removed.

The filter on the motorcycle is a 541 filter at least that is the one I removed. No plastics were removed but i did cover the O2 sensors as best as I could. The latest WEB EPC that I saw (within the last week) the filter said 541. I just checked the WEB EPC right now and it has the 541 filter listed. It used to have the 779 filter listed over a month ago.
The special tool number 11 4 661 or the actual part number is
83 30 0 401 554 you should be able to give that part number to your dealer and they can order it for you. Have them double check their RSD if you have any doubts.

Unfortunately I ordered the one off the microfiche. Wrong filter. It will work but its a wee bit larger then the original.

And the easiest way is to just remove the left lower fairing.

Here's another option to the BMW filter wrench

Kyle BMW S1000RR Oil filter wrench

As for the oil drips try covering the headers with aluminum foil before pulling the filter.

I took the left lower fairing off and covered the pipes with tinfoil, forming a trough to direct the old oil down and out rather than over the pipes. I bought a filter wrench from Kyle racing, but it does not fit the "new" filter (same as K13) BMW is using. So I used a large pair of Channellocks to remove the old filter. New filter torqued by hand, no leaks.
With the lower fairing off you could probably get in there with a strap wrench, I didn't try.

For that "New" filter (BMW #11 42 7 721 779) I bought a KD Tools #3862 at my local Napa Auto Parts for less than 10 bucks. The filter is a 76mm / 14 Flute. I do the tin foil on the headers, works great but I don't remove the lower fairing.

What was wrong with the 'old' 541 filter?

Nothing that I know of! The other filter is just a little longer and doesn't require a special tool plus seems to be stocked more frequently by the dealers. BTW Kyle's tool is nice and not to expensive but I don't see it on his site at the moment.
